Smokey exhaust.....Paranoid???

Post by blueorb »

Ok, I pull up outside my house tonight and notice that there is quite a bit of smoke from my exhausts as reverse. Now is this because the weather is really cold and damp, or is there a problem?? It only appears smokey on tick-over. The engine is up to temperature.

Are others finding lots of smoke in this weather??

I think I am paranoid, but just wanted to check. 8-[

Other than that, the car is running superb at the mo.

I don't know if it is psychological, but the car feels better since having the timing belt changed. :D

Probably due to the cold weather m8, I wouldnt worry about it unless its happening all the time your driving, it should calm down a bit when the car has warmed up. You should see mine in the mornings, all the houses in my road disapear! Only blue or black smoke spells bad news HTH :D

Mine still smoking when warm on tick-over, although clears when driving.

Think it is just the damp and cold, as I havent noticed it in warmer, dryer conditions.

have a smell of it. if it smells weird then it is probably signs of your turbo seals going.

symptoms of that are smoke on tick over.

Smells of petrol, no wierd smell. I am just concerned because it doenst seem to clear when the car is warm.

Ive only noticed it over last couple of days though.

There doesnt appear to be any smoke when driving, just when idling.

Should I be worried?

Shaf, what do you mean by weird smell?

Thats the weird thing, initial start up even when really cold is almost clear, but when its warm, there is smoke on idle, that looks like any other car when cold.

Engine oil new and full.

I am worried again now 8-[

Maybe its just the age of the car???

Items to check

1) oil in the intercooler pipes
2) Timing
3) 02 sensor

 probably just the weather :)

Took her for a proper run tonight, as I have only been going short runs to work and back (4 miles) After a blast, all smoke gone at idle. I think it was just condensation, or the car wasn't properly warm/off choke??

Relief!

Not strictly true, excessive white smoke can also indicate trouble!

Best thing would be to try and get someone else to drive the car, and then follow it - see how much smoke there is, and what colour it looks.
Also - check if you have been using oil - if you top it up, and a week later it's dropped appreciably, then you are burning oil - the smoke should have a blue tinge in it.
Check around the tip of the exhaust - is the inside edge sooty? if you have the car running - get some one to blip the throttle while you hold a cloth about a foot away. If you end up with black soot on the cloth, then your car is overfueling.
If the smoke is just on really cold mornings and is very white, then it is probably just the cold. only other things to have loads of white smoke would be the headgasket - in which case check the oil filler cap for 'mayo'
