gps detector and speedo

Post by gasman »

Just tried out my new road angel, need to reset the alarms - they're a bit intrusive on default setting. But the interesting thing is how much the speed on the detector underreads the speedo - I guess the GPS should be much more accurate (disregarding the lag time of about 1 second), but it can under cut the speedo by up to 7mph especially at speeds over 60mph. Has anyonr else found this, or does my speedo need recalibrating?

I have the Origin b2 and it's pretty much spot on with the speed.... Does take a second to track the speed via satellite, but if I'm driving at a constant speed it's pretty much dead on....

i've the origin b2 as well an mine reads about 3mph over my speedo at 30mph an about 5mph over at 70.....I tend to belive the origin b2 as the most accurate.

Find the same thing with my sat nav. The cars speedo is about 3-5mph faster than the GPS speedo. Car speedos over-read, probably so that the car companies dont get sued by people getting done for speeding. Dont forget too that as your tyres wear down the accuracy of the cars speedo changes, the GPS one is always constant.

My Road angel classic reads at least 5mph different I assume its when the speedo had a face change & wasnt calibrated properly.

What is interesting though is that my speedo goes off the clock which reads 110, quite some way before hitting the 112mph limit & the road angel is exacly at 112mph, so the speedo reads wrong, but the ecu measures roadspeed correctly....I guess its just the needle position.

Still amazing that the road angel gets the 112 exactly!

I have the B2 - yes the GPS speedo (when cruising at a constant speed) is far more accurate than the awful speedos that come with most cars!
As said above, car speedos will invariably over read as part of their very design.
My Escort has the worst speedo in the world, when at an indicated 90mph, the true speed is about 78!

Car manufacturers are allowed to have the speedos over read by 10% and under read by 0%. If you were selling a car and you were allowed by law to make it appear to be 10% faster than it really was, what would you do? I'm betting all the cars you sold would be faster, I know mine would be, nobody would by a car that only did 95 in preference to one that does over a ton.
Also the govt are quite happy for you to think you are doing 30 when you only really doing 27.

The amount of people who believe their speedos are accurate still amazes me! Countless stories of "My Fiesta was bombing down the motorway at 130mph" when it's probably only about 112mph (or whatever). It's nice to hear some honesty for a change!

When using my Tom Tom, I tend to ignore the car's speedo and just rely on the GPS speed.
