i would probably have to consider a coilover refresh if i was going to go down that route, as i dont know how old the current ones are.

Have you gone permanently spoilerless Jim, or just removed it for the strip?

just strip.

some angles it really looks great, others not so much.

is hard to decide.

removing it really does given a very simple smooth look to the car.

A new plan has been formed in the shape of an old school TD06.
In keeping with my period upgrades I'm pretty stoaked.

Pure luck and timing, but when Andy got in touch after i left an interest in his old td06 kit when he went to the gt3076 I thought a good opportunity to get stuck in and refresh the unit given how many owners it's had on here!!

It for sure requires a rebuild, which was reflected in the price, but I have plans to renew gaskets, lines, uprated full bearing kit and a billet comp wheel which I will do myself.

thanks to Andy for keeping me informed, i have been super busy at work of late and this feels like a reward and Xmas come early.

After some research, though the kit supplied was an ats racing td06 20g kit, I was puzzled by the comp housing when looking for a billet upgrade. I believe the turbo may infact be a td06 17c, not a 20g. So smaller comp wheel and housing. But turbine side is a 20g.

I believe this exact turbo was used on a mitsi 4.3ltr v6 truck!!
I need to measure comp wheel, but early indications do look like this is a 48/68 comp wheel setup. Basically a 16g size, not 20g.

So earlier spool but not quite as much top end which is probably more ideal on a stock bottom end anyway.
Though 550cfm at 1bar is decent.

Anyways let the fun times begin!
Can't wait to be back in screamer vill!

Get that bad boy screaming! I do miss having a screamer. Smiles every time you drive through a tunnel....massive smiles.

Enjoy!

excited to see how you get on with this!! :thumleft:

*pedant mode* no such thing as a "20g" turbine side, the 16g, 20g, 17c etc are the name of the compressor wheel only, TD06 is the 'family' of turbos, which came with 3 turbine wheels either the TD06, TD06SL2 (smaller, better spool) or TD06H (bigger, better top end) i.e a TD0620gsl2-8 would be a TD06 "frame" with the sl2 turbine, a 8cm2 turbine housing and a 20g comp wheel.

interested to see exactly what you've got when you get the housings off and get a set of calipers on the wheels :thumleft:

Ha, guess I got the wrong end of the stick on that area.

i don't have a vernier gauge but got the comp housing off, yeh, odd one.
Visually a 17c housing going by Google, but defo 52mm inducer and 68exducer.
I cut out a 52 and 68 square from a bit of paper, they fit.

Maybe housing is machined??

Either way, that is defo 20g sizing!!
My bad!! Lol.

Not got exhaust housing off. But there is the 8 tag on the inside of the t3 flange. So a 8cm2 housing.

Guess you can't blame me for being curious with the housings.

Nice work,

The shaft looks toast TBH, if you can feel the scoring with your nail then it's a concern, you'll need to clean it up - ideally get it on a lathe and polish the marks out then see what your finished diameter is with a micrometer compared to the clean end of the shaft, you 'could' do it in a drill too, if you're in a pinch. - I could get it in a lathe at work for you if you're stuck, but would probably be a week or two turnaround time.

Even if it is dead all is not lost, you could upgrade it to a brand new 9 blade turbine (much lighter than the stock one) for about £100, which would make a killer turbo with a billet compressor wheel too

With a nail it didn't feel bad, wasn't an obvious step.
I'll take another look tomorrow, but an upgrade sounds more fun than trying to fix this and clean it up.
It is a little grazed on the comp side too, just harder to see it in the pics.

I'll happily chuck it in the lathe for you for a quick clean up if you like, won't cut it- just polish it.

What's the deal with balancing one of these once you've had it apart- do you need to send it away?

Afaik Mitsubishi turbos (and holsets and some BW) are component balanced - I.e the shaft and wheel are balanced on a rig before being assembled, so don't *need* to be VSR balanced

OK- cool, makes it easy...and I guess a quick polish probably won't throw out the balance too far...

Yeh that was part of the appeal.
Components are already balanced individually, so made sense to give it a go myself.

Cheers ash, I maybe in touch. I'll see what sort of deal I can get with the company I wona use for the parts.

doesnt look like i can get a 9 blade for the turbine side. its only an option for the other td06x housings. not the td06 i have. :-k

unless of course i want to machine my current housing

Yeh I may consider just replacing with a stock one.
I haven't a lot of easy options this side of the turbo.

What size wheel is on there now?

The offer stands if you want your original one polished, may be worth trying before buying a new one

55x65mm (ish).

Given I can feel with my nail it's rough in that area, I think im leaning towards changing it. Company im looking to use also (obviously, lol), suggest changing it too.
Is a lot of effort to try out and wear out new bearings with the old one. I'd like to fit and forget if I can.

Tricky one.
