And as much as I despise polishing the wheels, they really are perfect for the car so it'd take something pretty special to tempt me to swap - regamasters maybe, or some other forged, single piece Japanese wheels in perfect sizes

Wow, very tight fit! :) Did you happen to have the measurement on the actual distance between the two sides with regards to where your buttcheeks go? Want to see if the seating area is wider than my current ones.

I'm a 34" waist, 6'2" and around 13.5 stone and I fit comfortably, I've had a 17 stone mate drive it for a little bit and he fit in it ok.

not a real update as such but here goes:

as you may be aware my self imposed deadline to finish the car (by finish I mean have it roadworthy at least) was the "simply japanese" show at Beaulieu motor museum

so car ready, bags packed and with a little bit of reservation in the back of my mind (I'd never done a proper 'long' journey in the car and didn't particularly want the odd misfire that has happened a couple of times to crop up half way to portsmouth in the middle of the night...) I set off for the sunny south coast

Image

It was really nice to be actually driving it 'properly' (i.e not to/from the mot, rollers, mapping/logging etc) for the first time in ages, driving into the sunset with nothing else but the road ahead was pretty cool.

I was happy that it made it down south with no issues at all, took it gently sat at 70ish most of the way bar a couple of little blasts, cruising afr's are really good and I was pleasantly surprised with the fuel economy.

unfortunately Hampshire's finest decided to pull me off the motorway a few miles before the end of the journey while I was sat doing 69mph in the inside lane "because I have got a big exhaust and small number plates", they started going over the car trying to find something wrong, checking tyres, shining their torch down the exhaust (why?!) and then started to measure the letters on my plates with a tape measure when they got a shout for some real policing and left me alone - they'd obviously ANPR'd me, found out I was legit but still wanted to find something wrong

I had the car out for a few countryside drives with some mates and it's been great, the only adjustments I had to make was to stiffen the rear dampers up a few clicks

the friday before the show Mrs C35rob flew down to southampton to meet me, we did the touristy things around portsmouth (submarine museum, historic dockyard etc) on the saturday then it was an early start on the sunday to meet up with the other MR2 owners and continue on the last few miles into beaulieu in convoy

unfortunately I was too busy cleaning the car and then wandering the showground to really meet everyone but the people I did get chance to talk too were all a friendly bunch

I didn't take too many pictures of the car but here's a few the mrs snapped

Image

Image

Image

(that's me with the bottle of coke)

I got loads of other pictures of other cars, most of which are on my instagram, if anyone cares

The mrs flew back on the sunday and the car stayed down south with me until I got chance to bring it home this friday, it's been totally faultless, I've done a few more ECU tweaks (altered the cranking inj MS for hot starting, some very minor "around town" driving stuff and throttle tip-in)

so all in all pretty successful, I've got a brand new NGK coil here waiting to be fitted, as well as the AEM water/meth kit. The wiring bits needed to fit it have been delivered too so that'll be done when I next get some free time over the next few weeks.

very little happened with this since I've been back home, unfortunately more pressing issues have put it on the back burner.

I took it out for a long blast on saturday night which was nice, I should really wash it because it's still covered in flies.

on monday I started to fit the W/M kit I bought from Ashley, I'd bought a load of cable to repair/extend the loom as it had been cut out of the car it was previously in.

Image

apologies for the state of the boot, there's 20 ears of dust and grime in there, it'll be cleaned up before the carpet goes back in.

the pump is going to sit where its sitting now, i'll put rivnuts into the boot floor and they'll have M6 rubber mounting bobbins in them which the pump will then sit on. the tank will go pretty much above the pump, again mounted on rubber mounting bobbins to isolate it from vibration as much as possible.

I need to drill a hole in the bulkhead and fit a grommet which the water supply hose will go out of and the boost source for the controller will come in through.

the pump controller is mounted with industrial strength double sided sticky foam tape above the ECU where you can see it and the wiring will be wrapped up properly and secured pretty much where it's hanging at the min (it's only hanging loose off cable ties at the min while I sorted out cable lengths) using self adhesive cable tie bases

for the wiring side of things I'm running it all through a double output relay. the relay gets a 12v+ from the fusebox in the engine bay which has an inline fuse holder in it too, the ign live to the relay comes from the ign live wire on the 22 pin ECU plug. one output from the relay goes straight to the pump live and the other goes to the power and arm wires on the pump controller, meaning as soon as the ign is switched on, the relay will latch and the system will be armed straight away. i've set the pots on the controller for it to come on at 5psi and be at max flow at 17psi, I may play with that later on though.

bit of a long winded write up on a W/M kit but hopefully it may help someone if they're thinking about doing an install themselves.

I discovered the inner CV boot on my O/S driveshaft has split ](*,) annoying, since it was only recently that i'd had it all apart, 4 new boot kits arrived from TCB parts this morning so I'll try to get them done tomorrow, although I tweaked my back lifting the baby out of her cot yesterday so I may leave it, will see how I feel.

Sorry about that, although in fairness you weren't missing much given how badly it had been wired into my car in the first place!!

Are you planning to spray pre-compressor? Looking forwards to seeing how that works out- I did a lot of research on it and it sounded like an idea with massive potential :thumleft:

I wasn't complaining, Hope it didn't come across like I was having a go!, for the record I saw pictures before I paid Ashley and knew exactly what I was buying.

I definitely do want to spray pre-compressor, from every real-world account (mainly on RX7's) I've read it's the way to go - and you can't really argue with the laws of thermodynamics, but I need to fabricate a nozzle holder. The inlet on my turbo is quite long so I can't use a stainless or alloy 90 with a bung welded onto it on the compressor housing as the radius wouldn't be tight enough and it'd hit the heater pipe that's in the area, so I need to come up with something that will slip inside a silicone bend, probably just a 10mm section of 3" stainless pipe, with 2 small rods holding a 1/8 npt threaded bung pointed at the compressor wheel nut.

Until that happens I'll spray it in the I/c cold pipe.

Really wise move IMO Rob, I will 100% be going for additional safety via WM in the future. I really believe it has a good impact on the cylinder cooling of the block which of course is one of the biggest worries on high power 3S bottoms. Look forward to the install.

No offence taken Rob, I was just apologising for the butchered wires- I did literally just cut the ends off to make it look somewhat presentable!

I've not had much time to work on the car this week, but managed to get into the garage this afternoon for some much needed garage therapy

first order of business was to make a nozzle holder for pre-compressor water injection.

so I dug an offcut of 3" stainless pipe left over from when I made my downpipe, a small length of 4mm stainless rod and a 1/8 npt stainless hydraulic fitting.

Image

I chopped the pipe down, cut the rod to length and cut the fitting in half then blasted them together, not the prettiest thing I've ever made but it'll never be seen. this cost me less than £5 to make, so even if you could buy them off the shelf I'd still have made my own!

Image

Image

next up was to make an exhaust heat shield - I'd bought a slightly rusty mild steel one from Josh a few weeks ago to use as a template, and scrounged some stainless sheet from the offcuts pile at work so set about cutting out the new pieces

Image

and then bending up the other piece over a piece of 38mm pipe held in the vice, which left me with this

Image

I'll wait until I get some proper gas before I weld this though.

Still waiting on the rubber mounting bobbins turning up then I can put the boot carpet back in, fill the water tank and test the system

another couple of hours on the car this afternoon -

the postie dropped my rubber mounts for the pump and tank through the door at lunchtime so I set about finishing the WI install.

Image

this is how it all sits (without carpet obviously..) pump and tank on the right, controller above the ECU and the loom & controller boost source fixed along the bulkhead on self adhesive cable tie anchors. I covered the loom I made/extended with braided sleeving and heatshrunk both ends to keep it neat

Image

and that's the ecu side, you can see the relay that it all runs through in the middle of the picture

Image

and a close up of the pump/tank, you can see the water supply hose secured along the bottom of the bulkhead on the same cable tie anchors, much nicer than having stuff dangling about freely.

here's a pic of how the nozzle holder sits against the turbo inlet

Image

and how it sits inside the hose

Image

I decided to run the hose through the intake and poked through a little hole in the end of the air filter, that way it's out of the way and unless you were actively looking for it you'd never know it was there

Image

and fitted the check valve on the end so it can all be removed as an assembled unit

Image

that's all you can see from inside the engine bay

Image

and the boot with the carpet and insulation back in

Image

obviously it was tested before the inlet went back on and it's all working fine, so far.

I'm really happy with the install, just running the one nozzle pre turbo at the min, I've got a weld bung so I can put another nozzle in the IC pipe, but that'll have to wait until I go back to work because I don't have a TIG set at home, sadly.

the tank is just filled with plain deionised water for now, I'm taking the car for a drive over the yorkshire dales tomorrow so will report back how it feels then :thumleft:

not in the slightest to be honest... pre compressor injection is nothing new, the yanks, aussies, kiwis etc have done it forever in big power rotaries amongst other things without the water condensing in the intercooler or the compressor wheel wearing away.

I have, however taken a "before" close up picture of my compressor wheel, so in a few months I can go in, inspect it and see how it looks - I'm confident it'll be exactly the same.

With the size jet you are using it should be fine mate (or so I was assured!)...but I'm curious to see how you get on, I wasn't prepared to risk damaging my turbo with it (i.e. pitting from water droplets hitting a hyper sonic spinning compressor blade)- which is why I sold the kit in the end :eye:

Very tidy install - me likes it :thumleft:

Yeah i was going to say that about the compressor getting pitted but thought you'd be all over that .. watching with interest bud , love your posts :thumleft:

May i ask Rob what size jet you using ... and have you thought about running 2 jets eg. 1x 0.4mm spraying into the compressor to cool and change the compressor map .. and 1x 0.4mm after the intercooler to up octane and cool cylinders plus knock suppression n all that good stuff .

Based on what I sold him: 180cc pre-compressor, with a second 760cc nozzle before the TB :thumleft:

As Ashley said it's got a 180cc nozzle pre-turbo at the moment, I've got a choice of 3 AEM nozzles (155,315 and 630) or the 760cc coolingmist nozzle for pre TB injection. I'll probably start with the 315cc nozzle and work up/down from there.

No pictures cause I'm full of Wensleydale cheese and port (some on faceache for people I've got on there), but had an awesome day out in the car today, from home down to Richmond, then across to Reeth, the road from Richmond to Reeth is excellent, mostly tight twisty B roads with the some flowing sweeping bends. It's quite bumpy and the car is too quick for most of it though, you'd have more fun in something like an MX5 where you'd be able to kick it's head in and not be at mental speeds. Still lots of fun though.

We went on from there to the top of "cliff gate road" aka the buttertubs pass. This is much more suited to the mr2, fast, relatively smooth sweeping bends, not too bumpy and being a weekday it was quiet so we managed to hustle along quite nicely. Obviously keeping within the speed limit... The Mrs did get a bit nervy at times because of the mega drop off the side of the road.

Then down to the Wensleydale cheese factory for a look around the museum and to buy some cheeses, followed by a quick drink in a country pub (Diet Coke for me) and back up the buttertubs the other way before heading home.

The car behaved perfectly, the compressor wheel didn't launch it's self into a low orbit either!

I'm happy with the WI, it's only a tiny nozzle so there wasn't a night and day change in performance but the recorded inlet temps were lower and the car feels much more crisp to drive - not a tangible measure of performance obviously but it's definitely better.

The only 'negative' observations front the day really are that the rear tyres are still rubbing over the really bumpy stuff. I'm going to raise the back end by 10-15mm and do a little more work on the arches.

I think my jet was 300cc rob so the 315 should be sweet depending on your cars injectors size :thumleft:
