Which charge cooler is best that fits in the engine..?

Post by QUOC2008 »

Which charge cooler is best that fits in the engine that can handle over 450-500bhp

I just been to brands hatch today and had a real blast on track with my mr2 turbo but it seems the cc is overheating after along session rising up to 70 degrees. I got pwr system and it doesn't seem to be doing the job... hmm

What pre-rad do you have and where is it located? If your system is getting too hot, it sounds like the pre-rad isn't doing its job well enough :(

Also, did you see a white Tommi Makinen Evo going around the track?

Yeah I did it was a very clean looking white Tommy...

it was a really hot day no aircon made it hard to last longer then 10mins of driving.

I think ur right my pre rad does seem abit small maybe I should swap it out for a bigger.
My cc is in the engine bay on the left side like Ashey.
My temp were going up to 70 :$ and even my engine water temps were around 97-99

The Precision one works well for me:

But as said above, you do need a proper rad up front to get it to work properly :thumleft:

That Evo is owned by a colleague of mine :thumleft:

The thing is, if your charge coolant temps aren't staying low enough, a bigger core won't help as that's where the heat is coming from! You'd be barking up totally the wrong tree by replacing what is already a sizeable and well engineered core. What you need to do is get rid of that heat and that means the pre-rad needs improving.

The entire point of W2A intercooling is to take the cooling airflow at a good point on the car and use it in a place with much less air flow. People seem to think W2A is magic and the heat just disappears into the water... it doesn't. It needs to be taken out of the system, which is the pre-rad's job. You want a pre-rad to receive just as much cooling as any A2A intercooler. However, because pre-rad location is independent of the induction tract and pre-rad size won't affect lag, you can over engineer the pre-rad to be bigger than any A2A IC you'd fit to the same engine. A small and/or poorly located pre-rad is bad news and will strangle the ability of the charge cooler to do it's job, causing the heatsoak you report. IDK where yours is located or how big it is, but I did found a thread where we had a very similar discussion last year.

On an MR2, what this means is that you should almost certainly locate the pre-rad behind the front bumper and infront coolant and aircon radiator. You should avoid locating a pre-rad in a side vent like the SMIC was - there's no point in doing all the work to plumb in a charge cooler and then only using the same source of airflow as the SMIC you're replacing. Additionally, try to use a purpose build pre-rad if possible; oil coolers and engine radiators are designed to drop 90°C to 80°C and therefore don't need to be that efficient. A pre-rad is trying to drop ambient+10°C back to ambient temperature, which is a much, much bigger ask. You want big, you want lots of thin rows and ideally you want some form of alloy construction.

This is what I fitted: http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1585753

yeah before i hadnt had any problems with air temps, they were always around 30-40degrees but then again it was a very hot day yesterday and 20mins of me hitting the rev limits constantly even the tyres was melting and brakes glowing lol... but i know now the cc needs improving thank shinning i will take your advise and try it out will let you guys know the results.

thanks ashley I will try to work with what I got first then if all fails i will try this cc

how your build going... have you tested it on track this cc.

surprisingly my mr2 survived the very very hot track day at brands hatch... but it was soo much fun just learning cambered corners that most tracks dont have and new driving techniques. if i got time i will post some vids and a pics.

Ashley I would love to see your car on track... fun fun in the sun

cool vid

looking back im sure you realise need to look at keeping your hand position more consistent, and at 3 and 9. (does feel like your holding the wheel a little high in general?)

it takes a video of yourself driving to show areas of improvement. and you can compare lines and times. :thumleft:

yea lots of room for improve, I think I was braking and cornering too early and positioning could be better...

It's a bodge & open to failure- if you do rely on it make sure your ECU is clever enough to spot knock and to pull timing/ dump extra fuel in to protect your engine.

AND....it certainly is not the only thing that will give you the results you are after...proper charge cooling will, and it will be far more reliable.

solution- use a decent inter/charge cooler and tune for the engines true ability :eye:

Bodge is a little harsh a description, but i get what you mean :oldtongue:
I only went for it after a long chat with Fensport and he knows a thing or two about the engine.

Mine is controlled by the ECU and it has Aquamist failsafes too, So it will pull timing if anything. TBH Ash i can see where you're coming from. If you track the car alot maybe CC is the better route, but for road my SMIC and Aquamist and a both simpler and effective system.

The Aquamist system is over £600 so wasn't exactly a cheap option thinking about it

Or you can just do both CC and water/meth?

I am deliberately being argumentative...

I did have w/m injection, but to be honest having ditched it in favor of rock solid charge cooling, I wouldn't go back again...also having seen first hand how it can ruin your day when you are relying on it (Josh in the Pyrnees) I am even more sold on my decision now.

But I do get how it can be a cost effective option if you don't want to invest in a bigger charge cooling solution :thumleft:

Lol yeah there are some sweet cc kits out there but my gosh you need to pay .. cc never impressed me (sorry) add a liquid nitrogen cooler to a cc kit and id be in .. w/m best bang on a budget for your buck :thumleft:

Speaking from experience not just pulling it out my a$$ .. i owned a st205 and was not impressed with temps =;

Yep- the ST205 set up sucks a$$...a proper sized core will see minimal pressure drop, and a realistically sized front mount radiator with proper pump and cc beats w/m everyday of the week
