have you decided what you're doing about the painting thing? spraying it yourself still?

is this going to be making an appearance at beaulieu?

Yes am definitely aiming for Beaulieu. It probably won't be very pretty by then but I really want to turn up, put some faces to names and enjoy the day anyway.

At the moment it's a toss up between give it to Stuart at AES Developments. He can give it a basic job for between £500 and £600 (although I'll try talking him down a bit since I don't want the bonnet doing and I'll do most prep myself) and just doing it myself. In the interim I'm not sure I wanna splash out on all the painting gear so I might get something in spray cans with a decent nozzle. I've had a couple of recommendations for that and seen some decent results from people with patience. At least I can do the wings, bumpers, and hard top in the shed and then maybe take to someone like AES to finish it off as I likely won't have anywhere decent to do rear quarters/sills/windscreen surround.

More local to me is a company called ramp it up. They hire out a garage including paint and oven tools so you can do your own painting but won't need to buy the kit....just paint.
It's a bit far for you as based in Bristol but wonder if there is something more local to you?

The more I see them the more I fancy a mx5. I drove one on a drift day and liked it and do fancy one with a turbo for a bit of fun or for track.

That sounds like a good idea. Certainly worth a trip if there is nowhere nearer. Thanks Mark.

I'd say keep it N/A because it's hilarious fun already. I am tempted by a turbo kit but that's just not the focus for this one.

Today retapped a couple of bolt holes for the wings and took back some surface rust at the bottom of the inner wing and treated with hydrate80. It seems to have just been where some dirt (and a lot of ants*) built up in the bottom of the wing over time trapping moisture but actually came up really nice when I wire brushed and sanded it back.

I also fixed a wing mounting bracket where a stud had snapped, just drilled out and put a matching bolt through with a nut on the end. So many little M6 bolts it's always good to have a few spare.

I think I'll pop my powder-coated rocker cover on before dinner but I've still got to clean and refit the baffles.

Oops - I'll need to make a bracket up for the coil pack as this valve cover is from an NB 1.6 which has a different coil pack. No big just a couple of right angle brackets with suitable nuts I'll tack on.

Gonna drop it on now anyway :+:

&*"£ing locking ring on the rear o/s rear coilover just broke off in my hand today. So much corrosion. It's time for new coilovers. As much as I don't want that expense right now, it really needs to happen. I'm hunting around for something decent off a breaker before I commit to something like new HSDs. They'd probably be okay with new locking rings but overal they're quite scabby. I'm surprised how xxxx that is for Tein, but then these are pretty old now.

nightmare, Tein seem to be especially bad for corrosion, AK Automotive should probably have a set of coilovers in :thumleft:

Lol yes have seen that one on facebook/instagram but not yet IRL. I see quite few MX5s but not many mk1s any more :(

I went to swap the intake today but accidentally spilled coolant in the head. Woops. Gonna let it dry out and put the new one on at the weekend or next week and crank it over a few times before starting. Anything left will hopefully just form a big cloud of steam. I also managed to spill fuel on the alternator when I took the rail off. Today has been a clumsy day for me. Still not decided which coilies I'm going for.

Doing the coolant bypass mod for the intake/throttle body. Basically I am trying to get rid of as much from the engine bay as possible. A/C delete is next, along with wire tuck.

Also brakes will be sorted with 5.1 and braided lines before next track appearance.

It's still gonna be 3 or 4 different colours for Beaulieu  Not only do I have the cheek to park a Mazda on the IMOC stand, I also bring one that has the colour palette and visual appeal of something my cat threw up.

HSDs on over the weekend. Car is a bit low at the front. I don't fancy whacking my sump on anything.

The rear strut brace won't clear the top mounts on the HSDs so that's a mig project to mod the uprights to go over that. I don't think it does an awful lot but it's very light and doesn't take up any boot space so it's nice to have in place anyway. Bracing underneath seems to make more of a difference.

The Teins that came off are just too corroded. They still rode well but it's not worth the risk.

Too hot to work on Saturday. The n/s upper arm bolt is a b1tch to get out with air con pipes in the way as they sit partly in the space the nice engineers at Mazda built in for you to slide the bolt out into. I was really impressed with how easily it all came apart.

Injectors got new lower seals. Lovely.

New intake now on and everything plumbed back in yet I have no spark leading me to believe it's the coil pack or igniter but I should be able to pop into Maplin to get an LED to flash diagnostic codes tomorrow (they don't use the indicators like MR2s).

#4 injector isn't firing so I've ordered a used set and a rail, all new seals so I can swap one in and get it running, and then have a full set to get cleaned and balanced and paint up the new rail to match the new fresh bits in the bay and probably tidy up the injector loom as the stock one comes wrapped in black tape that looks scruffy after 20+ years.

I raised the front about an inch today so now it's got a little bit of a rake towards the back like it should. I still can't get the low jack under the front subframe. I think I may need to come up some more.

I also miss my MR2 :'(

How do you know the injector isn't working?

Process of elimination and other evidence suggested the best thing to based on probability was to swap in a used injector at a cost of £5 before pulling everything apart. 12v across the connector, spark at the plug, fuel pressure ok. What's left?
