Engine noises

Post by pbmr2 »

Hey all,

Been having an issue since Friday. The engine is making a bearing rattle type sound from 2500-2000 off throttle. Don't think it's the bottom end as the sound is too light and chirpy. Sounds like air con idler bearing, or cam belt idler bearing or maybe alternator. Could be a water pump but never heard one make this kind of sound.

Almost sounds like rally style chirp, chirp, chirp but higher tempo. any ideas where to start looking?

Does it in or out of gear but only once warmed up.
Checked all the accessories pullies by hand, couldn't feel any movement but the belts were still on.
Hard to make it happen when stationary, need a 2nd person I think.

Clutch doesn't change it.
Sound will continue if the revs stay in the range while off throttle and rolling.
There is a lesser rattle sound while on light throttle.

Have removed the air con belt to rule that out, didn't change anything.
Maybe tighten the alternator a little, not checked the adjuster yet, didn't feel finger lose.

Does the cam belt plastic come off with the engine mount still in place?
Any ideas what could be causing it?

Exhaust manifold gasket can often make this noise when it goes. If we're thinking of the same noise that is! On the turbos the manifold to turbo gasket makes it too. Check the exhaust manifold :thumleft:

Replaced the alternator and all is well now. the bearings on the old one had gone but it was still making power.
