aircon its not possible to re'gas if your system is working?

Post by masterbateson »

As the title says,
I was told by somebody that you could not regas the aircon in our systems?
I thought you could do it for any system even old ones, I thought that they may need to drain old stuff and replace with a newer different kind of stuff, but i thought i had seen summat on the telly that showed them doing something like this to an old jag? :-k

If this is true I may as well disconnect my aircon belt and strip out all the gubbins, bit of weight savings at the cost of a hot cabin, but with our weather how often is that likely.

Whoever told you that is wrong. The early systems used r12 gas which is no longer available. The air con place will just drain down the system and refill it with r134 gas. You may need a few joint o rings replacing but that's about it.

You'll likely need to buy fill point adapters if your getting it done at somewhere like kwikfit

Definitely wrong. Some air con places will tell you this because they were given an incentive to try and force everyone to have their systems reworked to support the newer type of gas. However there is a legal replacement for R12 - it's called RS24.

This will explain further - it might be what you orginally saw: http://www.kwecars.com/technical/air-co ... sion-myth/

Here's a company that will supply RS24, there's even an MR2 on their homepage!

You could get a conversion to R134a, but it will require new pipes for the higher pressure and when it's all done won't be as cold as RS24. I'm doing mine soon and I'll be looking for someone who does RS24.

cool  :thumleft:
think I'll keep my aircon after all, not to fussed about not getting the weight savings from removing it.
why remove weight, just add more power right! :-s

You can still refill with R12......If you know the right people. I've had my previous two SW20s refilled with R12. A whole lot colder than that rubbish R134a
