Discussion and technical advice the SW20 MR2. 3S-GTE, 3S-GE, 3S-FE etc
Anything and everything to do with maintenance, modifications and electrical is in here for the Mk2.
ive seen everywhere redline is the one to use but is there a cheaper alternative thats good too
i put my foot down from time to time but i dont drive it like its stolen and i dont do track days
my gears are a bit notchy so i think oil change may help i have already changed the bushes to bearings
I will be using ecp's triple qx 75w-90 fully sythetic oil. Made by big brand and repackaged I think.
Some people rate valvoline but at that price point its semi synthetic.
Last change had redline and no issues with that either.
im under the impression i need 4.1 litres for the turbo box and it comes in 3.78 if i use redline so i have to buy a big tub and then a litre also itss £87 all together off opie
Ive used both halfords and commas 75w90 with no issues, halfords is £10 a litre, comma about £8 if you look on ebay you can currently get the triple qx for £5.09 a litre delivered
just use the best oil you can afford, it'll be years before it needs changing again and really, four quarts of MT90 isn't that expensive.
fwiw I stuck this in my box when I changed the oil http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-68901-fuchs ... 5w-90.aspx

I know i'm going to be opening a can of worms here but when I was looking into which oil to get the only oil I could find was rated GL5 which is apparently bad for synchro's...
Paper on it here http://www.widman.biz/uploads/Transaxle_oil.pdf
or just google gl4 vs gl5 synchro and see for yourself.
IIRC the shearing strength of the GL5 oil is too great and actually peels the brass off, something like that was a while ago I read it all
