[Mk2] [NA] Rev3 Difficulty selecting 3rd gear

Post by Marty95 »

Hi,

When the engine is running I am unable to go straight to 3rd from 2nd. I have to go to 4th then 3rd. But when the engine is off I can select 3rd no problem. :-k

Any thoughts or Solutions would be great.

Cheers

Check the linkage at the gearbox as someone moves the gear leaver

I recently had a very similar issue with mine, where it wouldn't go into second at all. Like you I also thought that the car was selecting my unobtainable gear whilst the car was off, however when I actually tried starting it up like this (when in gear) it popped out immediately and wouldn't go in.

Turned out that I had a linkage issue.

My gear linkages weren't long enough to push second gear into place.
Ended up being a 2 minute job fiddling with the linkage by the gear stick to extend it 2mm and now it works faultlessly :thumleft:

Like Bob says get someone else to change gear whilst you see what's happening to the actual gearbox. Or take the short cut (if you think it is the linkage) and have a fiddle with the linkage length in the cockpit and see if that has any effect. If you take off the trim by the gearknob there are x2 linkages that you will see connected to the gearstick setup. The one closest to you when sat in the drivers seat has a threaded section (usually covered over in plastic to protect it). If you unwind this it extends the linkage thus lengthening it. If you play with this it's completely reversible (and quickly) so it might be worth playing with if you can't face getting a mate round and crawling under the car.

Failing it being a linkage issue I'm not sure if it would be a synchro issue...

Does it actually drive fine when in 3rd?
How long has this been happening for?
Were there any symptoms before it started doing this, and any modifications you've made that would affect it?

Hi,

Cheers for the reply. Its a project car which Im building back up as I found the car rotting in an abandoned carpark. I have never had the car up to speed to select the gear. But 1st, 2nd, 4th and reverse are all fine. 3rd i have to slam it in and 5th is abit dodgy too. I will certainly give the linkages a go to see if it makes a difference. Can the linkages jam or sieze if not used for a long while.

Cheers again for the reply.
