Cluster swap - Burned out wiring?

Post by ACE. »

Soon I will be doing a mechanical to electronic speedo swap. But before I attempt this, I just wanted to ask you guys about the compatibility of clusters. A guy in UK told me that I need a cluster that has a barcode number matching my original cluster, because if I get the wrong one, it might burn out the wiring?!

My car is a 91 MR2 Turbo. Originally sold in America and exported to Denmark. The cluster I will be getting is a UK one. So I know there is some difference in the gauge setup (everything has been moved to the opposite side of the cluster). Will be getting a UK cluster as the LHD cluster's are hard to come by in Denmark.

Ever tried "burning out" a cluster? in a swap between mechanical and electrical? in a swap between RHD and LHD?

Any heads up's before I do this?

As long as you sit down with both wiring diagrams and swap pin-for-pin I'm sure you'll be fine. There are very few USDM cars on here so I doubt there will be anyone around with the specific knowledge to answer your question!
