At Long Last.... Pistols 1.5 swap

Todays update
after a nice helpfull chat with Paul Woods
Finished off the engine mounts, top hats and then cleaned around them and gave them a coat of primer after seam sealer, and on the inside of the arches where the weld came though

also cut the engine to boot hole

really coming along now

thursday will see the engine bay fully jet washed cleaned up and ready for the engine
wil also while at work make up the plates to strength the front and rear mounts

well i was thinking of droppping engine in today, but decided i really need to do all the little annoying jobs so i will be happier puting the engine in, lots of little "unseen" jobs

first off, got the clutch on


then woohoo gearbox on, first time doing clutch gearbox




so now its dropped its pretty much togther apart for a few vac pipes i am unsure of

next up i made tenisoner brackety thing for the alternator, using a mk1 one then making it fit



then it was change the throttle cable as mine was down to 3 threads of wire, so that was changed pig of a job but go there and run the cable down the drivers side of the tank to give me the extra length i needed, but no pics of that

then moved onto the handbrake where that had been fully disconnected for the fuel tank out, so got all that bolted back up and adjusted up so all works ok

next was the drivers side drive shaft i still had connected and having trouble getting it out, today decided it was coming out..
ended up putting the car down on a ramp thing (the drive on ones) and using the new handbrake and the wheel un against the jack to stop the car moving, and a large scafold pole
it i still tried going over the wedge but in the end it gave in and came out so happy dayz

next was clean up and spruce up the engine bay, so cleaned and gave a coat of paint, its not perfect ( this is to be a used and abused car) but it tidies it up a lot and does the job




then i realised i have owned the mk1 over a year now!!!!
so dropped it on the floor and gave it a well deserved clean as it was covered it grinding dust welding dust etc etc




next job maybe one afternoon this week is to get the engine in

Oooo, only just found this thread.

That's my old engine!!!

I recognised the oil filter kit and thought 'that looks familiar' and so I started reading from the beginning.

Hope it all goes well Pete. I really wish I didn't have to sell the 1.5, never did quite finish it. Hopefully end up with another soon.

Its been cleaned up a bit now, found its a rev 2 engine, will be running a rev1 ecu and loom though

so so so unbelieveably chuffed, feel like its a massive milestone
when it was bolted in felt like a dog with 2 ****

and huge thanks to peter gidden for all the phone calls he has had and helped me with

now the mamoth task of getting it all connected up

but honestly never thought i would see this far

quite surprised how much space there is around the engine actually, although its gonna get smaller as i start connecting up

Been busy today

Fitted rear engine mount found the old one worked perfect so engine before must have been fitted using a Paul jig

Speedo cable done
One rad hose done, gotta make a couple bits to make the rest fit
Vac hoses all done
Alternator fitted and connected
Everything connected electrically
Intake all on and throttle body on with vac and coolant hoses connected
Fuel lines connected and filter fitted


Left to do
3 coolant pipes
Drive shafts
Ic pipe work
Work out how to make throttle cable work
Clutch hose
Boost gauge

All good fun

I still highly suspect the st
Although this will e running doubt I do 3 months without teething problems
And although I have done brakes and springs
Before I go hacking through 900 miles of mountain roads I think with the power in a mk1 I would want to do poly bush all round and new shocks etc
And I won't have the money to do them at the mo because I am saving for the trip

But we shall see

Made the pipes up using stainless pipes from work and old mk1 hoses

Nope.

I welded the mounts in by eye.

Throttle Cable:




Have you still got the black bracket on the plenum?

Using that, I had no adjustments to make to the original MK1 cable. Although when I fitted the engine in to the SC I had to use an NA cable.

My cable doesn't seem long enough, the cable reaches but the wire is a tad to short
Is that washers either side I the black bracket to hold the cable?

Also I am missing the thing the 2nd recirc pipe connects to, what is it??
