[Mk2] [Turbo] sticky front caliper

Post by scleary121 »

i have a sticky FR LH caliper on my rev1 tubby. having read some atricles on here about sticky calipers i set about cleaning the slider.

It has been ok for 2 months but now the problem has come back. Had a quick look on ebay/google for recon brakes but im seeing a lot of different part numbers and varients on dates running for certain types etc.

i have a rev1 turbo with the original 14" wheels. my problem is i cant be sure that the current brakes on their are the orignal ones so how can i confirm which ones i have fitted so i can replace them with the same?

i dont think the later brakes fit under the 14's so it's almost certain you have the original units in there. Each caliper has a stamping on it, if you post that up some of the more knowledgable chaps will confirm what you have :thumleft:

As Allan says post up some pictures...

If you look at the side of the calipers it should say though. 16V indicates rev1 calipers and 22V indicates rev2+ calipers :thumleft:

I can pretty much guarantee that you've got original 16V units in there. Easy enough to overhaul and refurb.

Any issues then feel free to drop me a pm as I've recently replaced every part of my braking system with brand new parts; calipers, lines, hoses, splitter, stopper, pads, discs, etc...

Hope that's just a typo, but there's 2 sliders :)

Did you just clean it/them? or did you re-grease them? and which grease?

Just so you know, refurbished calipers do not come with new sliders. So if the sliders are at fault then you won't fix the problem.

right i will see if i can get under the car and get a photo of the brake housing this evening! thanks for the 16v / 22v tip!

yes that was a typo, sorry about that

i cleaned them, gave them a rub over with some emery paper and popped some copper grease (off the shelf stuff) on to them and into the calliper hole.

Could be why they've seized up again? (if you Google copper grease on caliper sliders).

I use high temperature lithium grease :)

this is the best picture i could get without taking the wheels off. i couldn't see any markings saying 16v or 22v so i assume they are on the side inside the wheel rim.

It's a wheel off job, as it's on the outer face of the caliper (facing the inner wheel edge if that makes sense).

Definitely rev 1 calipers, if you want someone to refurbish the calipers you could try contacting this company http://www.biggred.co.uk/

If you want to do the refurbish them yourself then I can help with advice.
