I had stea coming from the engin mainly arund the fuse box near the coolant expansion tank. Also my temp needle almost few off the gauge !!!

I took it to Rogue in Coventry and had a full engine flush which resolved the issue - I 1st suspected Head Gasket abut thankfully it wan't.

Regards - Gav.

What was it in the end Gav?

dansREV2turbo wrote:hi, i bought my mr2 turbo yesturday, 50 miles down the road steam comming out the back!! the worst thing to happen when youve just bought a car privately.
i pulled onto the hard shoulder,
the engine coolant cap, had came off . so i topped it up carried on 1-2 miles same again, cap came off. topped it up again and wedged the cap on with a t-shirt.
1-2 miles down the road happens again but this time steam comming from all round that area (under the fuse box )
called the aa and got towed home.

the AA bloke said it might be the head gasket!!
is there any other possibilities of what it could be?
does anyone know the cost of the worst case ?

please help this new owner!!!! :(
thanks

Mate, sorry to hear that! :(

I'd check the pressure cap first. The plastic cap and overflow bottle you're talking about should NOT be pressurised, and the only time you should get anything going on in there is if the pressure cap is releasing some pressure.

If the pressure cap is OK, then something is obviously heating the coolant SO much, that's it's making it boil which in turn builds pressure and thus forces the pressure cap open.

I'd suggest having the complete system flushed, filled and bled, and see if it still overheats then. If it does, have a compression test done (better still, have a leak down test done - this will tell you if the HG is gone).

Hope it's nothing serious, mate! :(

Well the other option is it has already had a HG done and not very well. The previous owner may not know this was going to happen mate, unfortunately sometimes they do just let go.

It sounds like the thermostat is stuck, and so it will boil the water in the engine without allowing to cool in the rad so causing the pressure build up.

Just an idea AJS

they found a small internal crack in the head :( but it can be repaired :D

after it has been repaired does the engine need any running in due to the repaired crack?

i want to take it to santa pod in october with a few m8s but i dont want to ruin the engine in the process!

go to a good garage and they will remove the cap and do a hydro carbon test on the water and tell you if its the HG !

If it is its gunna cost you around £800 for a standard job
