got my rev2 tub yesturday.....met the AA man on the way home

Post by dansREV2turbo »

hi, i bought my mr2 turbo yesturday, 50 miles down the road steam comming out the back!! the worst thing to happen when youve just bought a car privately.
i pulled onto the hard shoulder,
the engine coolant cap, had came off . so i topped it up carried on 1-2 miles same again, cap came off. topped it up again and wedged the cap on with a t-shirt.
1-2 miles down the road happens again but this time steam comming from all round that area (under the fuse box )
called the aa and got towed home.

the AA bloke said it might be the head gasket!!
is there any other possibilities of what it could be?
does anyone know the cost of the worst case ?

please help this new owner!!!! :(
thanks

if the coolant cap is actually coming off it sounds like it is faulty. it is sprung so should release pressure if there is a problem with the coolant system without it actually coming off.

I'd definately look at trying another cap before suspecting a HG.

*tries to think tubby*

Is that the overflow cap on the coolant system (big white bottle) rather than the sprung cap on the pipework then?

They can also fail, defo good advice to look at that first.

thats the one. ill have to try that , the cars is at the garage now just waiting for a phone call, to tell me the news.
the thing thats making me think thats its more than that is that i did wedge the cap on, and the steam came from under, now if i drive the car the temperature rises v.quickly.
i took it this morning to the garage the car was stone cold the garage is only about 2 miles away and the temp rose to 2/3rds in approxinatly 5 mins maybe less.

thanks for your help m8.

whata way to start the IMOC forum eh!

Yeah it is a shame...

But do get them to change that because it does give a load of similar symptoms.

Sorry to hear about your problems.... did it not do that on test drive then? I'd be straight back to the seller and demand my money back if it's HG!! There ARE some laws covering you for private sales so don't give up that easily!

...which are totally unenforcable. I was advised by the AA legally there is nothing you can do if you part with your money and drive 10 yards and the engine falls out. The private seller is assumed to be a non-expert hence in the eyes of the law could not be held responsible.

... although I'm lead to believe that withholding information about the state of an item you are selling can be an offence. Now I realise this would be hard has hell to prove but if there were a why of getting someone to admit they KNEW there was a problem with the car but hadn't told you about it then they are accountable for that....

I had EXACTLY the same thing happen early in the year, unfortunatrlly i was pi$£ing it down with snow and cost me £150 to get home !!!

I had stea coming from the engin mainly arund the fuse box near the coolant expansion tank. Also my temp needle almost few off the gauge !!!

I took it to Rogue in Coventry and had a full engine flush which resolved the issue - I 1st suspected Head Gasket abut thankfully it wan't.

Regards - Gav.
