Uk rev1 with lots of work having been done on it

Post by KarlBristol »

Testing the water as the call of a tvr is just too great for me

I am contemplating selling my mr2 mk2 rev1. As most of you know it's had an extensive amount of work done on it, and I will happily upload full details when I have time and I'm not on the way out to work.

It's got full service history, runs perfectly, had a full brake refresh, new suspension, underbody seal, new seats, engine bay fans, lexan blinds, wind deflectors, etc.... Would be a perfect well loved car to drop a massive engine into  lol

All spares, etc.. That i have kicking around would be included with the car
I still have lots of bits to fit that I will if I get a chance. Ie full poly bush set, new rear suspension and braided brake lines, track rod ends, front ball joints, cambelt, etc...

I'd be looking for around the 2k mark to imoc users... (I spent somewhere in the region of 5k-7k on it since owning it)

Here's the build thread;

http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic. ... &start=320

If there's not much interest the car will be kept, loved and I will start the slow slow save for a tvr!

I'm still in 2 minds about a sale, but my heart wants a Tuscan!!!

Well it is with regret that I put that advert up...
If nothing comes of it then I will keep it. Ideally I want a tvr though (and one day a cobra). Unfortunately im not in a position to keep or even buy x3 cars

On the bright side someone here will get an amazing car

Still in two minds...

£2k for an FE is kinda way over the going rate for the lowest powered MR2

I would strip it as you'll always get more money than selling the car as a whole and may make closer to the £2k you're asking for.

This.

Although i wouldn't strip it after doing all the work to it to get it back into that excellent state.

Why not keep it and start saving, who knows next year the car market may be different for MR2's and you would be able to sell it for a lot more than current prices?

I bought my car for just under £1.2k a couple of years ago and that was one of cheapest that i could find in that condition. Now i would be luck to get £800 for it. (not that i would sell just yet anyway)

More  from me...

Surely if someone bought the car and then paid for a turbo conversion they'd be paying around £5k for it all, even with it being like new with all your work that's still a lot for a rev1 turbo, you could get a minter of a rev3 for less. You need to keep and carry on man, after all the time effort and money you've put in to it...

...or get a dog of a Tubby and do a bits transfer?

Remember my Rev1 Tubby was just a monkey! Great mechanically and (once upon a time when she still had one...) interior-wise, just the paintwork let her down.

I knew someone who had a Tuscan (think that was the one) and he went through about 4 drivers side wing mirrors in a year as they kept falling off and smashing themselves to bits down the road when he got above a certain speed.

My concern is that I know this isn't the car that I eventually want. I'm after a proper classic muscle car, hence eventually I want a cobra and before that I want a Tuscan. Both of these are unusual and rare. I can't see my mr2 ever being as rare as I want it to be...

If I keep the mr2 I fear I will spend lots more money on it, and still only get next to nothing back for it at the end. I figure it's better to cut my losses before I've ploughed so much money into it that I have no choice but to keep it.

It's not going to be a rare car in the near future, and just doesn't have the breath taking looks of a cobra or a Tuscan. I think I'd save more money in the long run cutting ties with it now otherwise I will end up doing an engine swap as I will get bored having nothing to do on it ... Then that will be another large amount of money gone with next to nothing to show for it on a final asking price.

If I sell this I can save more money for the car I really want as I won't be paying mot, tax insurance, and buying loads of bits for it regularly... Hence it doesn't make financial sense to save up and keep the car. I'd rather it was enjoyed.

Personally I think that 2k is very cheap considering what's been done to it and the amount spent. The car alone cost me over 1k when I bought it and it was pretty much a wreck then with no extras...

At the end of the day it is your own personal choice and there is no point keeping a car that you are not happy with. [-(

I think everyone here has been very interested in the project thread that you have had as well as seeing a 2 being brought back to its former glory. It seems such a shame and waste of effort for you to go through all that time and money sorting the car out only to sell it on so soon without reaping the benefits of it. ](*,)

It looks a lovely example of an early MR2 now and would be horrific if it ended up in some 18yr old boy racers hands

As i said above though it is your choice, money, happiness, life, time, etc so do what you think is right for you :thumleft:

I'm happy with the car, don't be under the impression that I'm not. It just makes more financial sense to sell it in order to save and buy a tvr.

If its any re-assurance it's only going to be advertised on here so that it would go to a like minded owner and not a 18 year old boy racer who would destroy it, lol. It's certainly going no where near the hole that is eBay.

I will continue to work on it during my ownership until/if it sells, so the build thread will continue to be updated and copious amounts of money will still be spent on it! Lol. (That's part of the problem as I can't help myself whilst it's sat in the garage! Lol)

Unfortunately I've been unable to do much on it the past week or two as I've been stuck at work :(

It will get to the point that I've done all the bodywork and mechanical parts that I can on it, and then I will be met with an engine swap

In the meantime, if anyone has a spare tubby engine going very cheap that I can strip down and rebuild to a high spec then let me know.

I still love the car but putting the car up for sale just seemed like a more sensible option in the long run. If it gets to the stage that I drop a new engine in, I will keep the car and run it alongside a tvr or cobra in the future :thumleft:

It would be a shame to let it go, however I respect that you're thinking with your heart and not just your heart. Whatever you do will be a stunner, I have every faith in that.

If I can offer any help or advice in any way you know where I am buddy :thumleft:

If we're talking financial sense then it does not make financial sense to buy a base model car and then spend £thousands modifying it only to sell at a huge loss less than a year later.

If buying a TVR is what you have your heart set on, if I was you I'd be putting the Mr2 back to standard and trying to recoup some of the money you have spent modifying it.

I just cannot get my head around buying a car, spending a small fortune on it and then selling it under a year later.
If you can't see the angle, you're in trouble.

Very tempted!!!
And I guess the car will get rarer with age anyway :-k lol
How possible is a diy engine swap? Or is it just worth dropping the car to a specialist?
A v12 is out of the question if I continue to save for a tvr, so a tubby engine might be possible...
