E153 Transmission Rev1 vs Rev2 vs Rev3

Post by ACE. »

Currently I've got a Rev1 E153 in my car, but as I'm in the process of rebuilding the entire car I've been searching the web for info on the different revisions of these transmissions as I want to pick the best one for my build (will buy a used transmission and rebuild it). Not sure where the revisions end and begin (Rev1:1990-1992. Rev2:1992-1993. Rev3:1993-1995 ?)

The info I've sourced so far. Not sure on this.

The Rev1:
-As bad as is gets. Simple/bad syncros (can not be upgraded to dual/triple syncros)
-Parts for this transmission is more readily available and cheaper than later revisions

The Rev2:
-Dual/triple syncros adds an improved shift feel and also handles high rpm shifting better.
-Difficult to source parts?
-Parts are more expensive than the Rev1.
-Electrical speed sensor

Rev3:
Same as Rev2 ??

I understand that there is also som difference in the gear ratios between the revisions.

Not really interested in the oem lsd's availability between the revisions as an aftermarket Quaife will be used.

Can anyone shed som light on the changes between revisions?

Toyota supply all the parts you need for any of the 3 gearboxs, Rev 1, 2 or 3

Rev 3 would be best but it all depends on how worn the box is.
Quaife only make a diff for a Rev1 but will fit in a Rev2,3 but will need the Rev1 speedo gear. Rev 1 drive shafts may also be needed, non LSD

1. Would rev2 N/A gearbox fit rev1 turbo engine?
2. Would rev1 turbo lsd fit to rev2 N/A gearbox?

It'll bolt up, but clutch will need to be sorted.

No.

I suppose turbo clutch will fit, no?
But if lsd does not fit to N/A gearbox, then not interesting :)

prob the same as the v6 conversion scenario

if you have a turbo engine and NA box you will need an NA friction plate/thrust bearing and a turbo pressure plate

Why would a rev2/3 need the rev1 speedo gear? I thought you could use whichever you wanted, mechanical or electrical speed sensor, on all revision gearboxes. Unless the speedo gear doesn't have anything to do with the sensor type?

Are there different revision driveshafts aswell?
