No, get a proper suspension kit not a poo one.

Back to the OP - I'm definitely interested in the BC splitter :)

So following on from getting the stereo in and working over the weekend I decided to pull out what I thought were the original front speakers which were sounding terrible with lots of distortion even at low volume.

Will come to what I replaced them with in a second but here's a pic of what was installed...

Image

A fairly modern set of Kenwood's!

It's easy to see why they weren't sounding great, the cones were shot to pieces on both sides. They had even been installed with the cover over them. Quite why I don't know given the OEM speaker grill covers them fine anyway....

Having spent quite a bit over the last little while and my latest flogging off of goods on eBay having problems with non-paying bidders I decided to do something pretty cheap for the replacements. After considering a few options including second hand and reading a few reviews I thought I'd take a punt on these 10cm Ripspeeds from Halfords.

Ripspeed 10cm Speakers

I couldn't believe the price at £9.99 and really expected them to be pretty terrible. Still at that cost you could just give them away if really bad... and there were lots of really very positive reviews online about them so I took the chance.

First of all they are direct replacements. The speaker wire attaches to binding posts much like home hifi. The build quality is very, very good. My wife mentioned that she couldn't believe that they could be cheaper than a box of Persil! Yep it's a strange world! So far so good then. In easy, and look/feel the part.

Turned on the stereo and really very surprised by the sound quality. I really dont think you'd do better for 2-3 times the price. Sure there is very little bass (you'll need a sub for that with such small cones) but the midrange sounds clear and has a lot of definition with acoustic guitar and vocals. The high frequency is also very clear and the overall sound is nicely balanced. I was half expecting a sound like music being played through a tin can but thats not the case at all, they are musically capable speakers.

So in summary if you need a pair of direct replacement speakers for the front or rear of your car at a low price I don't think you're going to be able to beat these. I had half intended to swap them out once all the other jobs are done but I might actually keep them for good! Of course the haters will say they aren't as good as £100 sets - well of course not and I wouldn't claim that, for the price however they are outstanding.

Now I just want to get on and replace the rears. It never ends ;-)

Last night I got fed up with the squint Supercharger decals on the doors and ripped them off. This despite not having found a suppler of good quality replacements. Came off ok (see photo below), read some stuff about using hairdryers, but found an old wiper blade aerofoil in the boot and used the plastic edge of that to scrape the vinyl off. Something like a credit card or edge of CD case would do the job just as well I think. It made a bit of a mess but cleaned up ok thankfully.

Image

So far I've found the following options for replacements:

1/ UK eBay - single colour so doesn't have the OEM outline colour. Cheap but rather nasty option

2/ US eBay - full set of decals which is good because I need the front bumper three stripes as well. Again though the lettering doesn't seem to have the outline and the door decals seem to be the same size as the boot!!! (plus its the USDM "Supercharged" rather than "Supercharger")

3/ Twosrus - good quality but expensive and also the USDM lettering rather than JDM.

I actually prefer the look of the car without the decals but do want to have the option to go back to the stock look in future if I want. Here it is sans decals.

Image

This got me thinking about the overall look. Knowing that I'll need to refurb the Works RSB alloys I took a look online and saw that they also came with black painted spokes. I really like this and am considering it for when the alloys get refurbed. Quick photoshop effort - what do you think?

Wheels look good black. :+:

Don't get US style stickers. US is not cool when it comes to JDM cars.

I would save up the money and get some reproduction stickers preferably screen printed. Might cost a couple of hundred, but it's the only way to get it looking right. Alternatively scour the web to see what else is available for replacement stickers.

A local vinyl cutting firm may be able to help. If you can do the artwork yourself (Mark did this for the Super Edition spoiler decal) then you can get them screen printed. Very expensive though.

I prefer the non sticker look and removed all of mine.

The main reason was, at traffic lights your usual spotty chav in his gtiRtypeVtiXRturbowrx4x4sparcorsDemontweeksEvobridescoobyr32quattrocorsamong mobile will always try to race you. The very same people tend also to drive 1ft away from your backend in a feeble attempt to read the sticker on the boot or make you put your foot down.

I was considering the placement of a 1300cc sticker on the doorsand boot after big pulley fitment and have some fun.

It maybe my eyes, but it looks like your passenger door is sagging slightly as the pinstripes are not lining up with the rear quarter.

Or perhaps the pinstripe was applied by the same chap that did the Supercharger stickers Alex :D

I must say, the Mk1.5 sticker on the back of my car (understandably) confuses most people, it gets questioned often. As you say as well, people tend to come close to the back of the car to read it, cant say that really bothers me though...

I've got some 'Turbo Charger' stickers made up somewhere for the doors as well.. I must fit them one day.

4th option
Try getting in touch with Coverco (Tommy) on the MK1 club forum, he might be able to help you out

I'm not super keen on the wheels as they are, but I really like them with the black centres and silver lips :thumleft:
Have you given any though to getting them powdercoated ? There's a pretty good place local to me, I got my MK3 wheels done there and alfiembra got his 1a triangles done there, very fair price and excellent work :D

Not really, the blue ones are JDM for a MR-S, the UK Roadster ones are red with the Mr T logo.
I have both sets, red ones came with the wheels, 3 of the blue ones I bought cheap on eBay and the fourth blue one I bought new from Mr T.
Had to order it specially but it only took a few days to come, can't remember the exact price of the top of my head but around £12/£15 seems to ring a bell.
I prefer the blue ones 8) they seem more appropriate to the MK1 since the logo is a stylised "screaming chicken"

Nice one Jimi - I do like the powder coated look but I'm pretty much sold on the black spokes now. Will see what prices I get for the work - any recommedations gratefully recieved although might not go for it until next year depending how the other jobs go and the cash situation!

Got a few small, but enjoyable jobs done today. The main one of swapping out the door mirrors came up against a big problem with nasty siezed screws which I've covered in another thread, but the others were quite satisfying to complete.

First of all I recovered the felt pads on the console as mine were faded and different colours. One was black the other blue. Now they are both black and whilst not quite the same material are close enough.

Image

Next job was to fit the new headlight knob as mine had the logo worn off. The replacement came without the metal sheath inside which was pain so had to sacrifice the original in taking it out and putting it on the new one.

Image

Finally removed the worn metal "Toyota MR2" badge (you couldnt really read it it was so badly worn) from the console. I tried to find a replacement and will keep looking but in the meantime the Jinxy MR1 bird effort does a great job of tidying it all up. Nice one!

Image

So just got to find a good way off getting those mirrors off without damaging other stuff!!
