LOL, John!

Okay, I took the chance and drove the car to court this morning in the middle of Manchester in rush hour traffic. I'm happy to report no problems. :+:

I've done over 80km since it went in and the engine feels good with good power, though I'm a bit scared to really rev it yet, but I'm sure I'll overcome that issue soon. ;)

It's great to have the car back on the road. :+:

Good to read that the Sprinter is up & running Lauren :thumleft:

It seems that many hands made light work at the weekend :)

AE86, Peter, it's never called a 'Sprinter'(!).

Anyway, I've had a few problems this week. On Tuesday I noticed the auxillary drive belt was squealing when I had the aircon on, so I tightened the belt up.

However on Friday afternoon, whilst turning I had a sudden loss of power steering and the AC light would just flash but it wouldn't drive. I got the car home after work and it turned out that of the three bolts holding on the power steering bracket to the block that two were missing entirely whilst the third was completely undone and only still there because the back of the bracket was preventing it falling out.

Naturally to get at all these, I had to take the compressor out of the way and loosen all the bolts holding on the bottom of the bracket. We didn't have a bolt the right length from the parts bin, so I had to get the junior hacksaw out and remove 10mm from a longer bolt. I had to remove the exhaust manifold and dizzy again.

Finally we got it all back together and made sure nothing would come loose again. Then I retimed the engine with our new toy, a timing gun!

It's all sorted and the power steering and aircon are back to working how they should be!

I'm toying with going back to Angers for a trackday on the 7th April, so I'm hoping it's all going to be okay for that!

Okay, have now covered about 1000Km after going up and down the motorway a bit for interviews and stuff over the last couple of weeks.

I admit, I haven't really checked the coolant levels (well I have but don't recall them being low) since we put it back together, but don't remember there being issues. Checked it after the run down to Stafford and back and there was a lack of coolant in the expansion tank. Opened the rad cap and it took maybe 100ml to top it up to full again. I then had to add water to the expansion tank. The engine had not ever gone over normal operating temp on the gauge, though I think given the oversized oil cooler that cooling is pretty much a non issue on my engine.

It's never used much coolant before it blew some out of the expansion tank on the trackday but that wasn't much.

I've checked it again today and it's fine.

I can't see any obvious leaks.

Will keep an eye on it. It could be it was slightly underfilled and is just settling, though I know it's nowhere near as fussy as the MR2 is with regard to coolant. We'll see. :+:

Will also pick up some Longlife as I need to order a new power steering feed hose from Toyota as it's looking decidedly perished.

I was there for an hour for an interview on Thursday morning, Peter. I had to get back to work straight afterwards!

I will be working around Stafford though after the 2nd April. :+:

Yep, that's it, Peter, my first contract. :+:

You should come over to Angers for the trackday on the 7th April as there are a few MR2 luminaries such as Toni G and our leader, Ben F(!) that are going to be there. There'll be Ben in his MK3 Turbo, Toni in her race MK3, Steve and Lee in MK1.5's, me in the AE86 of course and Ashley in his stripped MK2. Fingers crossed our friend Si will have his 4AGZE engined Striker making it's debut. Should be a stonking day!

Bring a lid and grab some passenger rides. :+:

LOL!

Cheeky bu88er has already said he's coming!

Reckon there'll be a few there happy to give passenger rides. Hopefully the handling is sorted on the AE86 now, so it should be a lot better. :)

I might do a raindance before the trackday.

Blimey, what a palava!

Found out purely by chance that I should have put a spigot bearing in the end of the crankshaft as on a FR gearbox the input shaft only has one bearing as opposed to two on FWD/MR2 gearbox's.

So, there is a bearing that needs to go in the nose of the rear of the crank. Obviously as I got my engine from an MR2 it won't have one of these bearings.

What a game eh? So, I only found out by pure chance following a comment by someone in the know on Driftworks.

So, tomorrow I will be dropping the box and getting a new bearing on Monday and fitting it. I've already done over 1000kms and if nobody told me, I would be none the wiser(!).

Arrghh!

Certainly a bit of a PITA having to pull the box out Lauren

These things come to try us :( (as they say)

Vital to have it right though :thumleft:

Will post up pics tomorrow (left my carmera down the workshop).

Gearbox removed. :) Wasn't all that bad really. Also a fair bit lighter than a FWD box and much easier to handle. :+:

Will get the bearing (6001 2RS) which is the weediest bearing you've ever seen and knocking that into the nose of the crank.

We put locktite on the flywheel bolts which were all holding tight, but better safe than sorry and all that. Took around 3 hours in all.

More fun and games today! Only took 7 hours to put a bearing in, bolt the clutch up and fit the gearbox, 6.5 hours to get the box aligned and in basically! I will be buying one of those clutch alignment tools. It obviously doesn't massively matter too much if you are fitting an MR2 type box with no spigot bearing, but alignment is absolutely critical with a spigot bearing.

I did say to Mark this afternoon, do you think I should check the clutch alignment as I did it by eye? He said no, we had another half hour attempt of wiggling around the gearbox. I then decided to drop it again on my own, which resulted in the box landing on top of me, but I couldn't get it off me, so was stuck for 5 minutes till one of Mark's employees found me and gave me a hand.

Mark then re-aligned the clutch and guess what, the box popped fully home nearly straight away. That 6.45pm by then so we put in a couple of the main bolts and called it a night.

Taken loads of pics but CBA at this point so will post them up tomorrow. Should have just a couple of hours now in the morning to finish bolting everything back together. One observation from spending a couple of days under the car, is how mint the underneath is. :)

In the absence of a proper alignment tool a good way of getting it bang on central is to use the depth gauge part of a micrometer and measure from the friction plate edge to the flywheel edge, do that in the 3 open gaps of the pressure plate and you're guaranteed mm perfect centralisation of the friction plate.

Ah, what a good idea! Damn, why didn't I think of that, we have enough verniers and stuff flying around.

Cheers. :+:

An ideal alignment tool is a primary shaft from a scrap gearbox

T50 gearboxes are around £350 used. There aren't many lying around, but yes, great idea if I did happen on one. :+:
