[Mk2] [NA] Castor angles ?

Post by Zeppozen »

If the Front top mounts were replaced, struts removed etc, will this alter the castor angles.

I have read that McPherson struts mean it is not critical, but one side looks at a different angle to the other

(tho the car drives fairly straight and wheels return ok.)

Just a general question.

I had this,
the two bolts that secure strut to hub, give a slight in out adjustment of the hub when refitting, just a matter of loosening them off and measuring the gap from hub to strut bracket to get them about right before tightening.
If you want to be more precise there are settings somewhere on here,
and im sure ive seen a how to on you tube using a square and a spirit level.

That would effect the camber, not the castor.

To OP, if you replace the topmount and subsequently remove the struts to do so, the caster shouldn't be effected. That's control by the tie bars, which on a Rev1 are adjustble I believe.

Yep,see what your saying,
assumed the op meant the wheel
but one side looks at a different angle to the other

Thank You Both for the interest and answers
As mentioned it was a general precautionary question.

I will take another look and Strut tie bars.

Funny how the simplest thing is often the least obvious.
The car was dragging to the right big time and steering wheel offcentre on return from the replacement tops at the garage.
Obviously I thought that steering geometry had been knocked out of Kilter during the change.
Hence why I started looking at castor angles as track shouldnt have been touched.
Turned out the drivers side tyre was flat after sitting in garage for week.
Pumped up all tyres and the 2 is straight and true again.

But on inspection of both sides one strut looked further forward at top than other. could be illusion.

But hey ...if it aint broke.

Thank you again .

P.S. The modern design addage to all things upgraded or revised seems to be " If it aint broke , fix it until it is" ](*,)
