mr2 mk1 prices?

Post by lion_yo »

Hi,

What should I expect to pay for a Mr2 Mk1b with less than 80k, low owners and with no rust or minimum minor rust?

In a good market £1500-2000 maybe.

Although I've seen some go recently for less than a grand :(

I paid £1700 four years ago for mine which had done 64k, FSH and minimal wheel arch rust.

Under £2000, maybe half that if we're lucky. I'm looking to buy a second Mk1 (NA this time) and prices are all over the place.

Tricky - because when you contact an owner to ask about rust, it's very hard to get a definitive answer. I don't think some owners want to look too close when they're selling!

A lot of owners are somewhat ignorant about full extent of the rust issues a mk1 faces, everyone knows about the rear arch issues, but even then most only consider the cosmetic side of it and many will consider a bit of bubbling to be a minor issue. Again, most know about the front bumper bar but anything beyond that you're trusting to luck about how well the owner knows the areas to check.

I would go as far to say that it's better to take the AE86 approach. If an owner says there's no rust, there lying. They just don't know where the rust is. MK1s are terrible for rust (just like AE86's), it's all that lovely Italian metal that Toyota used in the mid 80's. Thing is with a MK1 it's go so much metal in it, the rust could be anywhere or everywhere.

Unfortunately due to the relatively low value, with a lot of the cars, a little rust tends to see them scrapped fairly easily. :(

Never trust what a seller says when it comes to looking for rust. As Phil says, they probably have never properly checked for rust in the sills, A/B pillars/floor pan etc.

I first seriously started looking at buying a mk1 in about 1992 (finally bought one in 1994) and I can remember seeing some hideously rusted B and C platers back then.

i.e. arches bubbled and serious bubble bulge around the sideskirts. Shocking.

These days it must be a nightmare trying to find one that isn't dangerously rusted in the more critical areas like the floorpan and in the hidden areas around the sills as you say.

Mine is in pretty good nick rust wise as I keep it garaged and avoid wet driving as much as possible (still got the same rear exhaust since 1994!)
but cars like this are rare.

Rust on a floor plan?

Pah!

Easily sorted. All you need is a complete new floor.

I do smile a little when I see threads like this.

I always wanted a MK1 since my then girlfriend had one as a company car in the mid-eighties. I was driving an E21 BMW 320 at the time and was astonished how nimble her car was - just as much fun as an Alfasud but reliable and could be taken out in the rain...

The only other car I hankered after as a Classic was a Frogeye Sprite - which is cute but basically a pile of poop as a driving experience unless you wish to spend a further 5k on period mods to augment the 10k you'd pay to acquire a decent one in the first place. I can remember when you could pick one up with an MOT (and a glassfibre bonnet) for around a grand but now even full-blown LHD basket cases are fetching 2-3k a pop. And this is for a dog of a car with several parts that were utility engineered 60-70 years ago....still cute to a degree though.

There's seemingly a plethora of extremely serviceable MK1 MR2s available at any given time for a few hundred quid. Many of these could probably bang out 30-40k of duty with a grand or so spent on essential running repairs. Compared to its contemporaries, The MK1 is arguably one of the classic bargains of all time in the here and now, considering the engineering and styling effort that went into it.

It's deffo a buyer's market at the moment. Good luck to the opportunistic dealers who are currently asking up to 4k for refurbished examples. Because the MK1 looked just a bit too eclectic and feminine during its production run, many have led cosseted lives as second cars, looked after like pets by loving owners, hence the superabundance of quite redeemable examples with an MOT of sorts available for 5-800 quid...

....after waffling more than I intended, and in answer to the question - I reckon you could buy an extremely nice unadulterated MK 1 requiring no immediate pressing attention, for around 2k if you're prepared to travel. If you're extremely lucky, you could get a cherishable car for not much more than half that.

This is expensive.
But it could also be very very good:

All stickers present too.
I'd still want to have a damn good look underneath though.
