[Mk2] [Generic] Exhaust Manifold Studs

Post by alan wheeldon »

In the above pic I have a Rev2 3sgte head with a 9 bolt stud pattern manifold. I have tapped new studs into the head as they all snapped off previously. The one on the far right is now not straight and the manifold will not fit without me drilling the manifold hole out bigger which I don't really want to.

The Rev3 heads are only a 7 stud pattern which does not use the far left and right studs.

Would I be ok to remove these 2 studs and then use my 9 stud manifold with only the 7 studs and nuts?

I would take the wonky stud out and either ...machine it down so the bit sticking out is the next size thinner or re-drill tap with a bigger size...then you will still have to drill out the mani....no hammers mate =; :thumleft:

Offer the ex man over the bent out stud first. If that doesnt work out, screw several nuts on the stud, heat and tap it over or remove it and drill for a "time" insert but the kits are damed expensive.

If you have a spare manifold just open up the hole, it wont hurt as its the outside stud. Use a suitable fitting washer under the nut.

rev3 is actually 8 studs
rev1 - 7
rev2 - 9
rev3 - 8

All back together now and working just fine. I basically just removed the end stud and it's fine, not blowing or anything like that so it's all good :)
