UNBELIEVABLE! MY MR2 IS CURSED!!!

Post by veilside_mr2 »

Ok, it seems as though all i`m ever doing is posting threads about things breaking.

Well, today, its broken...again.

A couple of weeks ago I changed the turbo oil feed/return pipes on my rev 1 tubby. The pipe split and caused oil to p1$$ out all over my downpipe etc causing a horrible smell and loads of smoke.

Well today the same bloody thing has happened again (it would seem). I havnt been under the car to check yet, but it looks like the exact same place as before.

Is there anything at all that could cause two oil pipes to split in 2 weeks? This is taking the p1$$ now.

Its a nightmare job to replace these pipes and im fast losing patience with this car.

Suppose id better put up another "wanted" thread.

No mate, only had the car a month. The only thing ive changed which is oil/turbo related is the cracked oil pipe.

Im hoping to god its not the same thing as its a nightmare to change.

I just want the damn thing to go more than 2 days without something going wrong lol.

did you replace all the gaskets ?

trust me, both my MR2's were cursed when I bought them, but in time, with money and patience, they become excellent cars. :)

new banjo gaskets mate...same prob...even up tight with the old ones on it leaked a bit...more smell/smoke than drips, but still lost enough to worry about.

Thing is the car has been fine for a couple of weeks. Surely gaskets would have started leaking straight away?

Its a pretty major leak again, dripping continuously.

I HOPE it is just a case of a bolt needing tightening, but I doubt it. I think its another split pipe.

Its such a bloody nightmare to remove the pipe as well, that 27mm is a real xxxx lol. I dont want to remove the actuator again to get to it as it was a real pain trying to get the circlip back on.

took 7 months for me to get my mr2 rev2 turbo fixed when I bought it, losing interest the whole time having only ever driven it to pick it up but it had a faulty alternator which turned out to be a wiring fault and I replaced the cam belt and shimmed up the tappets.

Love it now and even though I have got the heater pipe to change and sills to fix I know its worth it when its running.

Do it my way mate...take the water feed pipes off...you need a small sized socket extension bar and 12mm socket , iirc, for the bottom nut...then the bar just feeds down perfectly.

I f I were you...I would wipe it all down, let the car idle and warm up, go for a short spin to get the oil leaking and when your home...and the car isn't too hot to handle...have a feel/check to see where the oil is coming from.
Although it's my banjo fitting that leaked due to an incorrect gasket...there was enough ambient oil spray around after a while to confuse things...if you didn't use a bent old split bit of bannana skin for the turbo end gasket then surely it's more likely to be the banjo fitting rather than another split pipe...how would it split? I bent mine out of shape trying to take the turbo off without removing the downpipe, so I know they're a bit bendy.

Just out of curiosity which water pipes are you meaning? Is there a pic of the ones you mean? Once I remove them would I need to mess about bleeding the system etc?

I drove the car over a pit today and cleaned up all the oil. Then started the car and let it warm up. A slow trickle of oil started to come down from where the two nut part of the pipe joins the turbo. Not the 27mm banjo nut. I cant exactly see where it is, but up there somewhere.

So its either the nuts need tightening, although I did them as tight as I could when I fitted them. Or the pipe has split/cracked again in the exact same place as the other one.

The trickle was rather slow though, obviously it would probably be faster with the car under boost and the oil pressure rising? I`m assuming thats how it would work? But on tickover it was a slow trickle.

I guess its time to remove the pipework again and see whats what. Bloody pain in the ass! lol.

^^^^^^the metal coolant pipes here, you need to disconnect at the turbo end and fols 'em out of the way...mine doesn't have a gasket, I have just sealed it with high temp silicone ...works fine, it's been off enough times to show up any weakness.
Bleeding...piece of cake man...really don't know what the fuss is about.
undo the filler cap half a turn (pressure off but still attached),
attach(hang) the bleeding pipes to rad and heater points and open the valves,
start car, set heater to hot and leave it to warm up,
the liquid in the tubes will bob up and down, leech bubbles if they're in there and should settle out at the same level...doneski.
Looks like your in for another episode anyway mate...can you get a little light/torch to show up the split in the dark if there is one (fingers crossed it's just a gasket prob). The gaskets that are on ebay look like they're made from toilet paper,

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Turbo-Oil-Water-G ... 3486037220

mine is steel like the banjo gaskets...as long as it's not bent...it won't leak...can't find one on Camskill.

Yet again thanks for the help mate. I did shine a torch up there but as you know its rather tight/awkward and I couldnt see exactly where the oil was leaking from.

The gaskets I fitted were from toyota and were all metal. I`m going to attempt to tighten the nuts up tomorrow, hope to god that fixes it.

Otherwise it`ll be pipe off, new pipe time...again! It just seems so unlucky that another pipe will split again, in the same place. Surely there is some underlying problem there which is causing this? god knows what it could be though.

Oh and as for bleeding, that sounds rather easy, I dont have any "bleeding pipes" though.

Well, it was the pipe. Split in the exact same place as the last one.

Awesome.

I dont suppose anybody has one lying around they dont want? 8)

Right at the very top of the smaller pipe, where it connects to the flange on the turbo.
