[Mk2] [Turbo] Wastegate Actuator Flap Stuck?? Help :(

Post by veilside_mr2 »

Hi,

I removed the actuator yesterday and today ive refitted it but it wont reach the pivot/flap on the wastegate. The flap is completely stuck, it wont move at all in either direction.

Now I drove the car without the actuator arm connected earlier to get a circlip as the one I removed broke. Would this have affected the wastegate flap and made it jam or something?

Whats the best way to free it up as brute force doesnt seem to help.

Cheers

Trev

Slacken off your downpipe at the turbo end...it's probably wedged against the elbow.

Yeah thats what I was going to attempt tomorrow. Do I not need to take the downpipe off all the way then? Its an aftermarket downpipe, i`m assuming its more likely to get stuck against them.

If the DP is a new one then I would skim a wee bit off the inside where it's snagged...but if it's not, then the wastegate just blew open too much cos the actuator rod wasn't attached...but you should try slackening the easier to get to ones first just incase it gives you enough play...fks sake though man...don't bend the DP flange...it will blow forever.

Ok sorted it, decided to go out tonight and give it a bash. Managed to get away with just taking off the top bolts in the downpipe. Freed up the wastegate and got the actuator arm back on. But I could NOT get the circlip back on for love nor money. Then managed to drop and lose it!! Grrrr!

Oh and succesfully managed to snap the cable for the o2 sensor whilst I was at it. God knows easy one of those are to pick up. Wonder if Toyota stock them?

wounder...you need the circlip or it will come apart...the O2 sensors are a plenty on here but expesivo from Mr T...sucker...lol.

I snapped my circlip when doing the turbo swap and ended up using a sort of spring/split pin type thing that was in my toolbox...shaped a bit like a capital B...has worked fine so far..

It will run fine without the O2 sensor...rev1/2 are closed loop and it only affects tickover...well...it's usable, may be a bit rich.

Really? It will drive fine? Oh right I thought it would not run at all. So if I just bolted it back in it should be ok? Or is it only a temporary thing?

I've read more than one thread involving broken lambda wires and similar...the cars all seem to misfire a bit when on boost but essentially it's not going to damage the engine if it runs a bit rich, It almost seems to be akin to the "offside rule" ... the rev1/2 lambda question...no body seems to reall yknow the answer...lol...do you have enough of the wire to connect the pieces?

I didnt, until I managed to saw the end of last night, now I have about a CM of wire. I can reconnect it to the wire now, but obviously it will be open to the heat from the downpipe. I suppose I could wrap it up in electrical tape and then some heat resistant tape or something??
