Anyone know this Mk1 ‘E965 ANM’

Post by Rob66 »

This ’88 red T-bar has been for sale on ebay for some time. Looks like a good car with only 33k miles but the price is over the top at £4995. There is also a short video on youtube, easily found if you search Toyota MR2 Mk1 (sorry I can’t give links as at work and have no access to Ebay or youtube here)

I’m going to have a look at it tomorrow and wondered if anyone knows any of its history.

Many thanks

Its best to pay for a car check on this one, you can get a few details of the DVLA but thats about it.

Hi Diamond

Absolutley, just wondered if it was a 'known' car. If it looks and drives ok will get a check before making an offer.

If I made an offer it would be massively less than £5K however good it may look.

Saying that reminds me a friend's son bought one from a garage & it turned out to be a ringer !!

Looks good, pity there isn't more about the history as it must be known but they are selling through a third party.

Hard to say if it's worth 5K though.

I've just insured mine for an agreed £7000 with my insurance company after inspection and a lot of work. It has not had or needed a complete body rebuild which aparantly can effect the price. If this car has been dry stored it could be worth £5000. How you prove that I don't know. My car was prodded and poked to ensure the body was good. Door lininings were removed and under trays + boot linings. Wires and levers were pushed into critical areas. Every part of the car was photographed and put on file comprising some 50 photos including inside sills etc. The suspension is all completely new and brakes etc.
Hope this gives you idea of Value.

All sounds very thorough. Would guess that an insured value may not represent actual resale value, but it is a tricky thing. Obviously there are MK1s out there that are worth way beyond the average price for a good one though, so I guess in that respect it's vital (if you own such a car) to get a proper agreed value policy.

I was chatting to a guy at Tatton Park last weekend who paid £12K (I kid you not) for a Mk1 with 27 mile (something like that) on the clock. He doubled the mileage bringing it to the show!

Still, I doubt it's worth 12K anymore, but I would guess that that car is most definitely not for sale!

I have made no profit on the car in fact I almost certainly have put more cost into it.

True a car is only worth what someone will pay.
The point is that now the good ones are becoming rarer.
I know of a sc one that has done lesss than 1000 miles and been in dry storage for 20 years I tried to buy it but was refused £11K.

I know. I'm sure nobody makes a profit out of their car. I did well to break even on a MK1a restoration. Free motoring for a year was a bonus as I saw it.

But realistically if you are going to keep a car and given the relative age of MR2s money needs to be spent to get them into good order and stop the rot.

Well, as cars age those in good fettle will of course be getting rarer, which will in turn push the value up. The general value of MK1s is still relatively low, though exceptional cars, do of course make exceptional prices.

35 miles actually he added another 20ish going to tatton, its 12K value is entirely dependant on someone else wanting it and having 12K to spare, that car was once sold on ebay for over 13K but the buyer wouldn't pay the import costs to the US so it was sold on for a loss, Montys Toyota were at one time asking 15K for it, I know of a white T bar with 2.5K miles on the clock that was sold for £10K a couple of years ago, this is of course the extreme end of the market and figure of 1/4 to 1/3 of those mentioned are still too salty for the real MR2 MK1 market

It's just nice to know that there is a core of enthusiasts keeping these cars going.
Core being the word, I suspect more than 50% recorded on the graph above will be beyond repair in 5 years killed by rust.

Well eventually, Mark it will come down to the core enthusiasts, just like it has with my current car. It's the way it goes really. If people don't keep on top of the rot (and they rot!) then that's the killer really.

The White T-Bar you mentioned is mine. I've owned it for 4 years now, the previous owner had it from new. It's been garaged all it's life and has never seen a wet road! Unfortunately it doesn't get as much use as I'd like and hence it's only just clicked over onto 3,000 miles when I took it out a few days ago.

Regarding their values as people have said they're worth whatever someone will pay for them, but likewise as Lauren said exceptional examples will always command exceptional values and I'm sure this applies to most cars. Mines insured for an agreed value of £10,000 and the insurer was more than happy to agree to this based on the mileage and condition and required no inspection. I had to sell a MK3 Roadster to buy it but I've never regretted it for a moment I love it to bits :) I'd always wanted a MK1 and wanted one when they were new but couldn't afford it, so when this one turned up which was basically 'as new' I just couldn't resist. For me the feeling of owning and driving a MK1 that's as good today as it was 22 years ago makes it worth every penny :D

should you ever want to sell it call me first, I have the pics here on my pc from when it was for sale & regularly drool over them, the only thing i would change about your car is it needs to be seen out a bit but thats just me being selfish and wanting to get up close with it

You're welcome to come and see it anytime mate, Stoke's not that far from Kenilworth :)

Actually I did pop along to the North Cotswold meeting a couple of weeks ago but apart from Mel the area organiser and myself there was no one else there even though it was a lovely sunny evening.

cool I'd like that, but was thinking more of your car being a nice exhibit at a show, would easily have got a tropy at tatton last weekend, they awarded best something to the blue 50 mile mk1 on the saturday and that has been chavved up with stainless steel tat, your if its still in the same condition as in the pics is the best i've ever seen and i've been looking for a while :thumleft:

Well guys I went to see the car. Looked pretty good on arrIval but no close inspection it needs a lot of work with some paint required on all panels and the alloys seriously corroded.
He wouldn't accept an offer so I will keep on looking and he will keep waiting for a buyer
