Replacing battery: Alarm goes off when connected and remote won't turn it off

Post by js1mr2 »

My 1997 mr2 mk2 has been sitting on the drive for a while, wouldn't start and a few minutes after trying to start it the alarm went off to signify the battery was almost flat (as it did a while ago when I left the lights on). I knew the battery was very old so bought a new one, connected the leads in the correct order and the alarm goes off again and the remote won't stop the alarm but the car will start so I've had to disconnect the battery.

I really need to use the car this weekend, can someone help me please?????

I don't think its that as I replaced the battery in the remote in December and it seemed to be working fine.

I assume the problem is caused by the fact that I disconnected the old battery when the alarm was sounding. Any idea how I could reset it?

no idea, the car im brealing now is the fist one ive had with a std fit alarm, just removed the interior and what i can see is 3 control boxes for the alarm, one under the heater controls, one (with a -/+ control) under the firewall carpet behind the cubby box, and one by the drivers side seatbelt (thats for the immob)

ok thanks, spoke to car radio shop and they said to try connecting battery, alarm will go off, close all the doors and hold down both buttons on remote to 're-code' remote to alarm.

Going to nip home in my lunch hour and give it a try.

I have to do this every now and then - for no flipping reason the fob just forgets its purpose (am I a tree? A sheep? What is my purpose in life? Why is this bloke throwing me on the ground?) and won't disable the alarm.

After trying the 'hold fob buttons down' trick so many times I never really figured out the sequence, just kept holding & pressing buttons til the damm thing worked - but I think I have the sequence nailed now.

Remove battery from fob - this will clear any codes inside it.
Open car with key - alarm will sound and you will look a tit - not a lot you can do about that.
Put key in ignition and turn ignition to ON - don't start the car.
Replace battery in fob.
Hold unlock button down until the light on the fob starts to strobe-3-4 seconds.
Hold down both buttons for 10 seconds.
You should now get a response when pressing the unlock button.
