[Mk2] [Turbo] won't start...overfueling???

Post by djpkins »

I have an intermttent prob with starting...well it's happened twice.

Turn the key and the engine just turns over without firing...there is a great spark and the car stinks of fuel..lol..the only way that I have been able to cure it is to undo the banjo bolt connecting fuel supply to the rail, crank it over...then it will fire..lol..rush back and tighten up the bajo bolt fkn sharpish before too much fuel is lost...obv this was just an emergency method of starting it up as I was miles away from home both times I had to do it.
When the fuel pipe is disconnected there is stil a constant dribble coming out of the it...even when I disconnected the battery earth cable...no where near as much as when it's pumping fuel in from turning the key though...any and all ideas are welcome guys...I thought it may have something to do with the turbo timer not turning the fuel pump off but now I'm just baffled...the car maybe feels slighly less banzai mental on acceleration and doesn't seem to pop as it used to all the time.
I was just about to stick a bottle of injector cleaner in it...but though I'd post this first.

mines ecu, arc ic, avcr set to 1bar, hks plugs, apexi safc set to neutral, fet turbo timer..good rotor arm and dizzy cap...

Not starting

Post by fen666 »

I had the exact same problem ...though mine is n/a rev 1 .
When it refused to start you could crank it over for ever and a day ... nothing... stinks of petrol ..... no sign of leaks.... plugs out ..bone dry ?
Sometimes it would spit back into the aircleaner and if you persisted eventually it would start .. lumpy at first and then it runs smooth, wait for it to warm up ..revs are normal at idle. So take it on the road smooth through the gears until I drop it down and floor it almighty backfire and it dies.
Then back to square one cranking and not starting ...... Tonight finally cured it fitted another coil/igniter unit off an old celica and first touch of the key and away it went no spitting missing or backfires!!!
The only thing that puzzles me though is the strong smell of petrol but dry plugs I was getting :-k

what engine management are you using? BOVs and mass air flow based engine management systems (ie those on rev1+2 mr2s) do not go well together

sorted now...it was a mixture of replacing the water temp sensor and replacing the plugs????lol unbelieveable really.

I was going to suggest plugs.. I've never seen nothing like iridiums for fouling soo quickly.... On a very cold start, mine spluttered / hesitated once .. then refused to start... flooded... cant be done with that crack... I'd stuck in some iridiums just till my engine was ran in... in the bin now !!

Past experience also suggest they dont perform well in the cold either... cold grade plug simply causes misfires, then as you've seen me bang on... where theres a misfire, theres a protruding ceramic to destroy....

Iridium = only the tip, the rest, good old fashion copper ! :thumleft:
