[Mk2 Turbo] Sounds like it may be something simple, but dont

Post by gmtc »

I was driving home tonight and the car was running nicely. I have the external wg set to limit boost at about 8psi right now and i was happily hitting the mark.

I approached a roundabout close to home, hear a small pop followed by what sounded like air escaping. bu88er, the car died on me in the middle of the roundabout. I managed to restart it in 1st gear and with a bit of revs crept the 200yards home with a couple of more stalls.

Now, after resetting ecu (by unhooking the battery) when i turn the key, the engine cranks and fires but will not run.

I was thinking it may be a vacuum hose of some sort that had popped off, but i cant find one. I suppose this would explain the crap/no idle and also hissing noise of escaping air.......buts its not an obvious hose as i've checked.

Here's the strange thing. This may be unrelated (however, i doubt it) but after the initial cut-out on the roundabout i appeared to intermittently lose all brakes (and the pedal went really hard). In fact i had to stop the sod on my drive using the handbrake! Just as well i was doing about 5mph in 1st!

I'm running a t3/t4 turbo with external wg and a custom chargecooler. I will be trying to get to the bottom of this tomorrow. Does anyone have any ideas of where i might start?

Thanks in advance.
Graham.

While i've no idea about your pipe work I can tell you losing all brakes after pumping the pedel when the engine is stalled is fairly common, happens in my 2 and previous cars... i can't quite remember the thinking behind it though.

Ah, thanks, that sounds like what may have happened. Will they recover by themselves or do i have to do something?

There's a brake vacum hose that runs above the intercooler and under the right hand side engine panel,it connects to a hard pipe next to the engine diagnosis port.Check to see if this is still connected at both ends :-k

Sounds like your hose has come off your brake servo.

IIRC the servo is fed with air from the intake manifold via a hose, which would explain you stalling but you should still have brakes, although the pedal would be much harder to push?

Hope that helps :)

AHA! I've located to root of my problems.

Thanks to the helpful comments above i took to poking around the intake manifold. One of the plugs i sealed up my tvis plate with when i gutted it had popped out  What a pro i am.

Thanks for help,
Graham.
