Take a sat nav

& check the MOT certificate mileage.

Ask him more info about the speedo.

When did it die? Was it raining? Did the needle bounce around? Has he checked the sensor plug? Only reason i ask is my sensor plug has been trouble since i bought my new car.

The spade connectors aren't making good contact

& despite tightening them up a few times, they rattle loose after a while

(or get water inside).

When this happens my speedo starts going haywire, especially under full throttle, with the needle bouncing up to the limit and down again.

If he describes these symptoms go take a look at the car and play around with the sensor plug.

Its on the top of the gearbox near the rear of the engine bay, easily reachable from the air filter side.
