Finally found the mr2 I want but.......

Post by lavictoire »

Well after months of looking I think i've found the right MR2 for me. its just been listed on ebay and have been able to agree a price with the owner. The plan was to travel there on monday and pick the car up. However.....When i was texting the guy this morning he informed me that the speedo had stopped working on his way to work and he would not have time to get it fixed. I really dont fancy driving the car back to devon (5 hours from where I need to get it from) without knowing what speed im going at. Any suggestions? I dont know why but I have it in my head that a "snooper" tells you what speeds you are travelling at? if this is true are they accurate? Gutted if i cant get this car now as ive been waiting ages for the right one to come up
thanks in advance people

Have you got a Sat Nav? Most tell you your speed on there and are more accurate than the speedo if im not mistaken!

Follow the car in front.

Also use RPM per gear to work out speed.

Bear in mind that you only have his word that the speedo has only just stopped working, could of happened a long time ago, and if the odometer has failed too, its not going to show the true mileage.

lol I know, not to everyones taste. I really wanted a border kitted two, but the more i saw the pics of this one the more it grew on me. and im fed up of waiting for a border kitted two so going to bite the bullet and "hopefully" get this one. I think change of wheels and rear lights and this will be very 8)

my tubby does 75 mph at 3,250 rpm in 5th gear with wheels and tyres at the same rolling radius as standard. so you could go by that.. thats assuming that the n/a is the same as a turbo, but i think the gearing is slightly different.. :-k
looking at the spec on your wheels i think they are bigger, so that would throw the speedo out too... :-k

Take a sat nav & check the MOT certificate mileage.

Ask him more info about the speedo. When did it die? Was it raining? Did the needle bounce around? Has he checked the sensor plug? Only reason i ask is my sensor plug has been trouble since i bought my new car. The spade connectors aren't making good contact & despite tightening them up a few times, they rattle loose after a while (or get water inside).

When this happens my speedo starts going haywire, especially under full throttle, with the needle bouncing up to the limit and down again.

If he describes these symptoms go take a look at the car and play around with the sensor plug. Its on the top of the gearbox near the rear of the engine bay, easily reachable from the air filter side.
