Tyre Pressures

Post by Nogg »

Hi all,

Doing a track day at Oulton tomorrow and was wondering what tyre pressure people would suggest to start off with.

Car is a Mk1 AW11B running Yokohama A539 195/50x15 otherwise a stock motor. Forcast is for patchy rain.

Thanks
Nige

Best thing to do is to go out as is (make sure they are all the same to start with) then once you've had a decent run and got them up to temp come in and measure them.

A good start would be to aim at about 2bar hot ... you'll find that the outside 2 will rise more then the inside so you may need to let more air out of some than others.

You don't want to overheat them , even road tyres will go off and you'll be amazed at how much the grip drops away when they get too warm.

Keep checking this after each session - you'll find the harder you push it (or the dryer it is) the more the tyres will go up.

Well, I started with 26psi and after a few laps in the dry came in and they'd gone up to 33 ! Dropped
back to 28 and they seemed to work well. For road tyres :D

after some experience i now tend to take out about "10 seconds worth" of air before i go out for the first time, then after a warmup session bring them down further to reccomended temp then after a proper session check again and adjust.

then just keep an eye on them during the day

oh, and REMEMEMBER TO PUMP THEM BACK UP ON THE DRIVE HOME!!! lol

Buy a digital tyre pressure gauge if you dont already have one. No point messing about guessing and its not as though they are expensive.

I set mine up to 27 front, 28.5 rear and do a session. Then check them again, adjust to what I feel is right. For me thats 32 front and 33 rear.

Your tyre pressures will also change a small amount across the day. I dont keep re-adjusting them over and over. Unless its gone from cold rainy day to blazing hot sunshine or suchlike.
