- on the alternator bracket there is a fitting which is meant to lock against the alternator when the pivot bolt is tightened.

It is on the outer

(non-threaded) pivot hole but on the inner face.

This fitting is usually seized/rusted in place.

There are two ways around this:

(i) Remove the bracket.

The either lever or push the fitting out.

And/or

(ii) File down the lugs on the alternator slightly.

Half a mm will do.
