Can you weld aluminium to anodised aluminium?

Post by ^Trickster^ »

I have a anodised fitting I need to put into my moroso oil pan but the threads are all messed up, theres a welding shop near me, will they be able to weld the fitting in?

I thought there was something about anodised aluminium and it couldnt be welded but i may be wrong!

shouldnt be a problem Graeme. All they will do is grind the anodizing of the area 2 be welded! then tig weld your new fitting in :thumleft:

Ahh cool, I didnt know if the chemical composition was different, so anodisation is literally just the applied coating only?

yeh it can be buffed off using a flap disc prior to welding! just dont use a grinding or flap disc that has been used on steel as it contaminates the area to be welded and wont get a sound weld :thumleft: hope that helps mate :thumleft:

You need to look it up properly but annodizing can be removed with caustic soda/drain cleaner....or something like that - it is certainly DIYable and cheap to do.

it can be removed with a wire wheel, but it cannot of been used on anything but alloy or it will contaminate teh metal further and make the weld porous.

has 2 be a stainless wire brush/wheel as the carbon in the wire wheel/brush contaminants the aluminium www.weldinggear.co.uk/new-page5.htm

I took it to a fabrication shop today, they turned all the anodised stuff off on a lathe and welded it into the sump, did a really smart job :)

Thanks for the replies
