Cam Cover Cracked!

Post by Phoenixx2 »

Just Swaped the cam cover seals today with some fresh ones, as the old ones where leaking.
After refitting the cover tightening in sequence and in stages.
The top three Bolt holes where they extend out slight to accomidate the bolts cracked!! and this was not even with an overly ammount of tightness on the bolts

All the others are fine and tightend nicely. Could this be a side affect from being just over the Exhaust manifold and near the turbo? I know it can get quite hot there.. It seems this part of the cam cover has gone britle because of this...

Now i'm getting even more oil seeping out and splashing onto the heat sheild.. which when stationary at lights ect, burns off and smokes out the vents! Quite embarresing ](*,) Luckly the oil level has not droped significantly.
But just so annoying. Will be getting a new cover tommorro to replace.

Anyone else come across this problem before??

i just had exactly the same happen to me, cover cracked on the bolt mounting right under the bov. Sprayed oil out everwhere. i stopped driving mine as i was advised that it could catch fire as the oil was very fine like a mist spray, and was right over the exhaust manifold.

i think they go brittle over time so clamping it down onto a new gasket can sometimes cause them to crack

I took mine off not so long ago, if you have a search for cam/rocker cover you will come across this happening quite regulary.

The bolts should only be very lightly tightened, not sure of the specific torque for them but they are very low. I just did mine hand tight.

:D Got my new cover today, Very clean and tidy!

Removed the old one (all three fixings had cracked around the top edge)

Fitted the new gasket and some blue instant gasket around the 2 cam ends and the dizzy end. Refitted all parts
(tightend only hand tight this time!!!!... No cracks
Run it up for a good 10mins no leaks :)
Took it for a good (proper) drive, No smoke :)

Great stuff.

Thanks to the Guys at Rouge who had the cover and arranged the Next day Delivery! Excellent as always
Thanks guys :thumleft:
