Re: Head bolt washers

Best one line reply ever! I'd read a load of scare stories about them being £10 each from toyota, just checked now and they're £1.20 each

Cheers Paul, much appreciated.

Head bolt washers

Hi everyone. I posted in the wanted section but not had any replies :( I've had a six month break from rebuilding my cylinder head, due to the birth of my daughter and the incredible ability of babies to take up every waking hour of your day! I've forced myself back into it, but now I'm missing 5 of...

Re: 4AGE 16v Cam Gears, Valve springs, Cams

I'm installing 272 duration Newman cams with similar lift and I'm staying with stock valve springs. Generally opinions vary on what is the max lift you can run on stock springs but it seems to be around 8-8.5mm. The spec sheet for mine said it would be OK, so that's what I'm going with! I have howev...

Re: 4age cylinder head rebuild

Thanks for the replies. Checked with Toyota and exhaust valves are £45 each! Seeing as I'm using the old valves I suppose I might as well go second hand? I've kept the valves/springs/collets etc as sets, will introducing a different valve with different wear cause any issues or, so long as I check i...

Re: 4age cylinder head rebuild

Cheers Lauren, thought it was worth trying to get a rough idea before I try and phone Toyota tomorrow. I was hoping the same retailers that do head gaskets etc would have them but I've had no luck. All the others look fine so no idea what might have caused it. Is looking for 2nd hand from a breaker ...

Re: 4age cylinder head rebuild

Another quick update on the head rebuild. My daughter was born 3 weeks ago so progress has been slow! Managed to strip down the old head and, while cleaning everything up, found a hairline crack in one of the exhaust valves. I've only managed to find a single supplier online, a non branded part on e...

Re: 4age cylinder head rebuild

Stenky that does sound like a pretty awesome setup. I've been looking on the AE86 and 4AG forums which have some pretty good tech articles. Interesting to see how it runs N/A with a setup optimised for a supercharger? I'll be honest after reading some of tech articles I did start looking at the US/A...

Re: 4age cylinder head rebuild

Quick update. Gaskets and head studs have arrived and the head is back from the machinist. Taken the intake and exhaust manifolds off, so I'm finally at the point where I can take off the head, strip it down and build up the new head. Decided to get it all done at the same time and put the 272 cams ...

Re: 4age cylinder head rebuild

Ha can't blame you, I've got some old Yokohamas on the back and that's skittish enough! Part of the growing to do list is replacing them with some Toyo T1Rs, along with a million other jobs while she's off the road. Let me know how it goes, especially if you ever get it on a rolling road. Be interes...

Re: 4age cylinder head rebuild

Ahh, uncontrollable detonation does not sound good! Is that because you increase the compression to the point where the fuel self-ignites? I'll keep researching, after all I haven't even taken the old head off yet. I have had a quick look at some ae86 forums, but I was under the impression the serio...

Re: 4age cylinder head rebuild

Tottacrolla, are you talking about the capacity of the recess in the head or measuring the actual capacity of the engine? If I take too much off the head what problems could that cause? All I can think of is taking too much off so it's no longer an non-interference engine? Given the points both of y...

Re: 4age cylinder head rebuild

Ah, forgot to mention running carbs not stadard ecu. Cheers for the response SuperRedMR2. I've got an Omex ecu to sort the ignition but good to know it might need adjusting. I was contemplating driving up to the dyno, but with that knowledge I might change my mind. I bought the head off a guy on eba...

Re: 4age cylinder head rebuild

Right I've seen Payen recommended on the other thread for head gaskets. Rather than clutter that thread with my questions, where is the best place to get them? There are 2 different part numbers for the full gasket set, DN390 and DN392, is this for the small port and big port heads? Any one have any...

Re: 4age cylinder head rebuild

Cheers tottacrolla, already checked and they're OK :thumleft: That said there's so much conflicting advice on different forums about what lift/duration requires upgrading. I'm sure Newman know what they're talking about so I'll take their advice! I'm interested to see what difference the gas-flowed ...

4age cylinder head rebuild

Hi, I've joined up to get some advice. I've got hold of gas-flowed cylinder head for the 4age in my kit car (16v bigport). I'm gonna rebuild the new head with all the parts from the old head. Any tips on what to upgrade while I'm at it? My list so far is to add a new water pump, head gasket and all ...

Re: Newb - 4age kit car

Ha 15 posts shouldn't take long, I've got loads of questions! I suppose the build thread for the head might be a bit boring though...but I can leave that for a while. Thanks for the welcome. I'm thinking about going mid engined with my next car and at the moment you can't beat an mr2 for the money. ...

Newb - 4age kit car

Hi, Firstly sorry if this is in the wrong place, I couldn't see a dedicated newby area. I've got a 4age powered kit car. Long story short I've been upgrading it over time and have now got to the engine. I've got a gas flowed and ported cylinder head and some 272 duration cams which are going in whil...
