NA engine build...

Post by Dale_V »

well alot of you know that i cracked the block last year on my standard NA engine  , so i decided to start from scratch and re-build the whole lot and add a few goodies too

old engine coming out:

there it is, going into the garage to be stripped:
Image

mean while i was working on my new block... cleaned, honed, new piston rings, shell bearings blah, blah, basically fully rebuilt:
Image

then along came the head, i mildly ported and polished the head, and bought some piper 264 cams and adjustable pulleys =P~ the cam lobes are huge, and wouldnt even rotate in the head walls, so out came the dremil to open it up
Image

cams now in and pullys on:
Image

head on:

added the loom and all the other bits:
Image
Image

then an 11lb lightened fly for an mr2 Turbo and a 6paddle 2.2camry clutch went on
Image

the cams were eventually dialled in, which i found hard to do as it was my first ever engine build, but i got there:
Image
Image

now for some gauges to monitor what the engine was doing:

oil pressure, oil temp and water temp, placed into my DIY holder:

Image
Image

time came after a bit more fiddling and after putting the gearbox on to put it back in the car:

and now for the exhaust to go on, it was for the turbo, so out cam the grinder and welder, with a few new flanges and a reducer pipe, and all was good:

Image

so anyway, she started up on the third turn of the key, but wouldnt idle, which didnt matter as i had to run the cams in for 20mins at 2000rpm, after this i changed the throttle bodys and took her out for a spin... the clutch is fierce  , its as lumpy as **** because of the cams and it stalls now and again, but thats all nearly been solved and is all good fun...

its done about 1000miles now and just gone on to some fully synth shell oil...

would i ever do it again? hell yeah :thumleft:

Good work mate

Personally i would of gone for a turbo engine but thats me

only thing i would of added while it was out of the car would be some samcos and that would of finished it off nicely :thumleft:

I reckon N/A engines sound better than turbos though, although I love a tubby lump with a Nur spec

they do sound good, mines a bit louder than i would have liked, but as its play car, then im not bothered

took it to 7200rpm today for the first time, it certainly shifts for an NA :thumleft:

Cool Dale,

A man after most N/A owners heart.

Damn, wish I had the skills to do all that.

What power gains would you expect, you must be itching to know and what's your full spec as I see a SS manifold on there.

Wish I'd had more time to clean up the internals on mine when it was out this time (3rd) but I only had a few days to tart it up so I can appreciate the effort.

Sorry

I've got a Rev1 and have been wanting to do the cams for about 8 years but back then there weren't any available as far as know. I've just missed out on two cammed up heads on ebay when I actually needed a new one which was annoying to say the least at the time. Haven't got a clue about underbucket shims etc but was it a straight swap apart from the dremmeling?

Let us know how it goes with the project.

Hi marc, you engine looks sweet, many hours put into that :thumleft:

my spec is:

fully rebuilt with complete new seals, rings, gaskets etc
-piper 264 cams
-piper adjustable cam pulleys
-11lb lightened fly for 3sgte
-6paddle clutch for a 2.2 camry, rated to 300bhp/300nm
-apexi induction kit
-xs 4-1 manifold
-ported and polishes head and also ported inlet manifolds and acis
-motoria exhaust for the turbo
-oil press, temp and water temp guages

i still have my strut braces to go on, but they are beint repainted at the moment, its going on a greddy emanage soon, and also nitrous

I have an apexi rsm, and its showing at 210ps in 3rd gear (thats with near on accurate settings programmed into it),so it deffinately shifts

obviously thats as accurate as i can record without going on a dyno

cheers

thats some nice n/a modding there dude, have to agree with the sound of the n/a, much prefur it to the turbo. Ive always likes the feel of n/a and have many many plans for mine, but it all has to wait.

nice to see stage by stage pics

cheers bud, well if you ever need any advice when you get around to modding yours then give me a shout and ill be happy to help

ps, marcnoonan, forgot to answer your last part... apart from the dremeling, there was only one issue, which is, that on the piper cams, it has somekind of extra pickup/lobe for a possible cam position sensor, that hit the cam cover when roated. So i had to grind that down to a suitable size, obviously it has no ill effect seeing as though the 3sge doesnt make use of that :thumleft:

Little update, i bought and fitted a Greddy emanage ultimate and a custom Boomslang harness

and the ecu is installed behind the passanger seat on the firewall, so its easy to hook upto a laptop
Image

its also been booked in at Thor for mapping.....

then to add a pinch of ooomph I bought a direct port wizards of nos nitrous kit

including a 11lb bottle
Maxflow valve
300w bottle warmer
maximiser progressive controller
TPS adapter
nitrous pressure guage
25bhp to 250bhp jets included

I also decided to respray the bottle, so prepared it, and sprayed in a very high flaked metalic blue:
