MOT results

Post by J-T »

It didn't pass

However, i cn't moan too much, as it's only failed on the handbrake, which ain't too bad for a 23 year old MR2 :)

So i'm reckoning the caliper will have gone (had the same problem on my AE82 corolla). Is brakes international the best place for a replacement?

Did you check the Handbrake cables first? These always wear out on the mk1s and are a common failure point. Could still be the calipers but be sure to check both first.

MOT man said the cable isnt acting on that side, indicating the caliper is probably seized (or at least the handbrake mechanism). Like i say i had the same prob with my corollas, which used the same setup. Was quite surprised tbh, as the handbrake on this is way better than on my corollas :)

It is fairly easy to disconnect the cable (pull out clip and remove pin), then get someone to pull the handbrake and see if the cable moves. Also try moving the lever that actuates the handbrake by hand and see if it activates the mechanism. Next thing to check is the top slider, remove the bottom bolt from the caliper and see if it slides off the top pin, these have been known to seize as well which causes problems HTH

I got my replacement calipers from a local motor factors, they were about £80 each from memory, you could always refurb them, have a look in the Knowledge Base :thumleft:
