[Mk2] [Generic] LED dash lights

Post by MR2_RICH »

Hi guys just wondering if any of you have brought the LED dash light kits of ebay? are they any good?

I can't see how they work though as the dash lights are small bulbs. The lights for the heater are mostly leds which I was going to relace with blue LED's and bulbs myself. I have a few sets of heater controls so I can experiment a little.

Just don't want to goto the hassle if the kits are pants.

Thanks

Rich

I bought replacement LED's from ultraleds and put them in the dash. Cost about £4 or something.

Took that pic under a cover during the day, hence some light to the right.

I also did the heater controls, but it didn't work out as good. I just think the placement of the lights on the unit itself are a bit rubbish.
Sorry, no pics of that.

led's

You are probably best getting frosted leds from somewhere like Ultraled's on the net, frosted leds helps give a better spread of light and prevent patchiness. Although having gone down that route and still not been happy I have to recommend the Speedhut glo dials. Quite pricey though.

Hi mate that looks really good. Did you have any issues with patchy lights as others have suggested?

Are they the wide angle LEDs?

I'm off for a look now :thumleft:

mmm I can't find any blue lights on that website.

Am I been a bit stupid lol.

Also how many lights would I need? 4? plus the 2 in the heater control and so other LED's for the buttons attached to that, plus 1 for the ignition.

Would it be cheaper to buy the kits off ebay?

lol how many questions was that?

Doh another one :eye:

i done a post on the oc with a link to some guy in america that got the led dash lights without any patchy bits

if you sand down the tips of the led so they are flat it eliminates the patcheyness, and fit quad led and file them down or something

Yours look spot on SevenR. :thumleft:

I made a bit of a willy up,

Bought the LEDs before I took the dash out as I only wanted to take it out once. Got lovely 501 blue 12 led bulbs with them all having flat tops for the wideangle spread....perfect I thought. Until I went to fit them and found the opening for the bulb is only 12.5mm, whereas mine are alot wider. ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

Now gone for these which are very near in size to the original bulbs. Ordered them last week so should be here any day and Ill chuck some pics up too.

If your updating your dials it is seriously worth getting a new perspex cover as they are only 18 quid from Toyota (20 delivered). Mine was 18 years old snd really tainted by the sun, but the new one makes such a difference.

They are the same for all Mk2's by the way.

Thanks Marc.
It'a also worth mentioning guys, that LEDS only work in their slots when placed in the correct way. If they're not lit up or dull, take the bulbs out and put the contacts in the other way round. Something to do with the current.
A lot of useful stuff on the OC.
