[Mk2] [Turbo] Getting Cambelt changed

Post by 01smiffy »

Watchya guys

Have got my car booked into garage to get the cambelt changed have been speaking to people and they recomended changing water pump, whilst doing the cambelt?

Is this correct because the garage never said anything about it?

Any comments would be greatfull!!!!

Christ! Is that prone to failure? Is it really worth changing that at the same time? How much is it? I really don't want to have to take it all to bits again

How much is a water & oil pump then, this sounds like it could work out very expensive....

My point being guys is that it's very easy to get carried away and start replacing everything. In which case, yes, it gets expensive, but of course the car will potentially live longer.

The pumps on these very very rarely fail, and when they do, it's usually the relieve valve, or bits of bearing wearing them away.

I do many cambelts and only inspect the water and oil pump. But if you changing the water pump as a 'precautionary' measure, surely you'd be nuts not to change the oil pump. Infact, I'd replace the oil pump as a priority over the water pump.

It's your call :thumleft:

3s pumps are good for a genuine 100k then you would expect to see signs of age, weepage from the seal in the oil pump/crank seal/and weapage from the inspection hole on the water pump. Changing the water pump and oil pump at the first belt changes pumps up the price and probably isnt required, but definatley on the second change.

Just paid £51 from a local Motor Factors for mine. It's definately worth changing it as it will cost you more in labour to strip the car out at a later date than it will to change it now...
