IMPORTANT questions about my resto ('88/9 NA Mk1B)

Post by yellowmitch »

Ok guys.

I have checked my car pretty thoroughly and this is what I have found / require info on

1. Reverse lights don't work (switch??)

2. There is a white multiplug beside the air cleaner in my rear boot. It is not connected to anything. Should it be?

3. Drivers door rubs a little on the bottom of the front edge when opening and closing but does not appear to have dropped (adjustable?)

4. Front and rear bumper covers have a little distortion (rear isn't really noticeable) Front rubs a bit on leading edge of bonnet. Any suggestions?

5. Don't seem to have any rear speakers fitted. Do have the grills ??

6. How do I remove the radio?

7. Cold start revs are 2400rpm, warm is 1000 - 1200 variable revs (waxstat? Paul woods?)

8. Car had some accident damage to Drivers side rear 1/4 panel. Everthing else seems pretty good, even from underneath. Can I EASILY replace 1/4 at respray or should I knock out and fill? (was done this way before)

9. Want to change the coolant, t belt and full service. Is it difficult?

I THINK this covers nearly all my questions. I have bought a full set of rear arch repair sections and 2 new genuine wings and 3 litres of super red clear over base 2k max meyer paint. I have bought some new lights, it has a new exhaust and it has a new clutch. I have had it on a lift and underneath looks 95% sound. There is no rot in the sills (side skirts off at the mo)

Am I right to proceed and is there ANYTHING else I should do?

I want a MINTER out of this and I am a fussy bu88er who is fairly competent mechanically.

Look at my website www.yellowmitch.com for past projects to see

I know this is a long list, but I feel that this is THE BEST forum and I want the jobs done soon so I need the answers.

1. Could be switch, have you checked both bulbs as they both tend to go at once.

2. This is unused on mk1b

3. Yes can be adjusted slightly by undoing door mounts.

4. My rear is distorted abit and this is common across the top. The front may need the bumper bar pulling out abit or the slam panel pulling out where the top bolts in.

5. Should have 3.5" speakers behind the grills, the grills dont come off, you have to remove the panel.

6. 2 screws in the top of the surround then it pulls off, then there 4 bolts that hold the stereo cage in along with the cubby hole thing.

7. Sounds like air in the coolant, 2.5k on cold is normal but should settle to around 800-900 rpm.

8. i'd get advise from a body shop to see what they can do, could save you alot of money.

9. Coolant is easy if you follow the guides avaiable, Timing belt can be done but is abit tricky due to space and the stupid exhaust cam jumping when trying to put the new belt on. Oil,air and fuel filters are also easy.

Check you getting voltage and if not the reverse light swtich is on the top of the gearbox. I often just remove the switch connector and bridge the terminals to see if the rest of the wiring is ok.

Ok, reverse lights dont work, which could be down to question 2, it depends on what white plug you are refering to, the reverse light switch is mounted on top of the gearbox & is visable from above ( normally has a black plastic top to it), follow the wire down & it should plug into a white connector near the air cleaner.

All the doors are adjustable but you will need either a mate to make the weight whilst you adjust it, or the help of a trolley jack with a rag on the bottom of the door to prevent damage.

Front & rear bumper scapes are common, best thing to do is to use wet & dry & remove most of the scoring & then respray them.

Rear speakers only on MK1b's although you can swap the trim from MK1b's to Mk1a's.

Radio is removed by undoing the 2 screws under the lip of the radio plastic surround, once its removed you can clearly see 4 pozi driver screws in the radio mounts, remove these & the radio should pull clear.

Variable revs could be down to various things, air in the coolant system ? vaxstat & TPS mis adjusted.

Quarter panels are no longer available for the MK1, when they were they were around £500 each.

Coolant change is easy if you follow the guides, should take no more than 40 mins max.

Cam belt is trickier due to confined space & weather the bottom pulley comes off easily or not.
Hope this helps, good luck, Jinxy

If your doing the timing belt, the best £10 i ever spent was on a pully puller to get the crankshaft pully off.

is the white multi plug in the boot not for high altitudes?

There is a link somewhere for the sagging door fix, I'll post when I'm on my own pc unless someone else has it.

As for high idle, stick a holed valve cap in the TB. And bleed the system as per recommendations above.

There is a breaker in Armagh with several mk1's, called Beattie on 02830839535. You migh get a nice panel !!

No it's definitely for cruise control, it's where the cruise control computer would plug in if you had it

If your logged in to mr2oc use the menu on the left, go to "Know Your 2" then MK1 section, then Engine section, articles are in there
