Which tyres for my MK1

Post by costie »

I have Bridgestones on at the moment and they are coming to the end of their life. Any recommendations for something that doesn't squirm at the rear end and a bit more grip, especially in the wet-or am I asking too much from a MR2?

I use yoko C.Drives on my 185 14" rims and toyo T1's on my 195 15" rims. Both cost around £50 a corner.

If you go to www.mytyres.co.uk you'll find 195/50/15 goodyear eagle f1s delivered to your door for about £36 each, then go to national tyres and they fit the tyres for £8 each as long as you show them the receipt.

mytyres.co.uk are currently showing Goodyear Eagle F1's in stock for £46.20 delivered, VAT included.
search for EAGLE F1 GS-D2 185/60 R14 82V runout (Dunno what the 'runout' means!) But these are the correct size for stock MK1 alloys! 15's will be tto big unless you have aftermarket alloys.
I had F1 GSD3's on my 200SX and can vouch for their performance as road tyres (avoid the track though, unless you like buying new tyres!). Unbeatable in dry conditions and superior in wet, combined with decent life.

You don't seem to be able to get GSD3's in the correct size. I don't know the differences between GSD2 and GSD3 (apart from the slightly less funky tread pattern on the GSD2's) but I'll willing to take a gamble on them.

I've just ordered 5 for my car, despite the current tyres having oodles of life in them. So I'm putting my money where my mouth is!

How do you rate the Yoko C-Drives? This is one tyre I was considering, also looking at the Toyo CF1 whos tread pattern looks almost identical if anyone has tried these?

Cheers.

be careful of eagle f1's avoid the ones made in china as they are not as consistently made as the others. had good results from both yoko spec 2's and toyo t1r's but the t1r's do seem to squirm around a bit when really hot.

Yoko parada spec 2's I don't know what they are like in the wet but in the dry they are amazing, very soft compound so I don't know how long they would last.

I've never heard a good thing said about P6000's on any performance car. They seem to work well enough on luxobarges, but on anything nippy or with sharp handling traits they tend to gain a reputation as widow makers.

There used to be a mk1 owner who consistently did trackdays with his Mk1, bounced it off the rev limiter for years and years, and p6ks were his rubber of choice. Twas the 'moon buggy' for those of you with mk1 memories which go back that far.

I have them on the Focus, and seem like a perfectly sensible choice to me.

I've used them on trackdays too, where they do indeed make sense as they last ages. However, on the road (and I have driven a set about 2,000 miles on the road, albeit not on a mk1) they have very unpredictable limits, and in the wet they are positively lethal as they let go of all traction with no warning at all. I think the compound is simply too hard for light/sporty cars, and I'd never recommend them.

I don't know if I would say the mk1 is a light sport car  - I've never found them like that at all, but, i'll defer to your knowledge on them, since i've only ever used them on the Focus, and found them excellent.

First set lasted 45,000 miles on the rear :+:

In my opinion, the description of P6000's as widowmakers couldn't be more accurate! Once upon a time, I had a Mk2 Escort with goodyears on it which had awesome handling. When I monstered the back ones I had a pair of P6000's on it and they were terrible, borderline dangerous in the wet..very unpredictable at the best, with poor levels of grip generally. Like driving on ice! Not a performance car tyre, though I can see they'd be fine on a normal family car if you didn't want to go fast. I've got Uniroyals on my '2 - not by choice exactly, they came as part of a tyre/wheel package, but they seem very good in the wet (which is when it scares me most). Not had an opportunity to give them what for in the dry yet though. Had goodyear eagles before, lovely handling all weathers, until they get low :D .

Another  for P6000, ive had them on a car before and didnt like them one bit. The C.drives are great for everyday use and not bad in the wet either. I forgot how much more fun stock size alloys are compared to my 15" 195's
