[Mk2] [Turbo] Rev 5 Exhaust Manifold

Post by Zippy »

I bought the car a couple of weeks back having been told the exhaust manifold had been changed (albeit for a second hand part).

After investigating a noise while running this week i've found out that the manifold has a crack on top about 1/4 of the way in from the turbo side.

Obviously my first thought is that the work was not done, but there is no evidence of the leak being fixed, and the noise was not there when i picked up the car.

so a couple of questions.

is there a known issue with these manifolds, that i might expect two to go?

secondly, the noise seems very loud for the size of hole, and seems to only be from one cylinder, which leads me to think that the gasket might be gone too. would you expect a fairly loud noise just from a small manifold crack?

Andy.

all the craked manifolds i have come across the noise tends to go away when the manifold gets hot and the expansion closes the gap up
however exhaust manifold gaskets tend to blow and keep blowing

Yes - spot on. the noise does go when the engine is properly warm.
I'll be replacing the gaskets anyway.

Is there a known issue with the manifolds or is it safe to buy secondhand.

manifolds are normally rock solid, rev1 manifolds were notorious for warping but as far asd i know they sorted that in 1991

my standard rev3 manifold has got a dirty great turbo hanging off it with none of the original toyota bracing and has been 100% reliable

Looks like i got my ar$e slapped by the dealer then :?

Been to Toyota and ordered a new one (ar$e slapped again) with gaskets.
Want to start modding - so better of getting this sorted absolutely.

Thanks for the advice.
