[Mk2] [Turbo] Lowering on standard dampers?

Post by Carty »

Hey guys, i just got my new rev 3 turbs last Saturday and as you can imagine i'm happy as larry, possibly even happier!

Since spending all my money on buying my new pride and joy my funds are rather low but the gap between the wheels and arches are getting to me :oldtongue: I found the Apex lowering springs on Jap-spec-performance.co.uk and are considering getting them. My only question is would i be ok lowering on the standard dampers or would i be better saving my money and buying a springs and dampers kit?

Also if it would be alright to do said lowering is the Apex springs a good choice or should i be looking at another make?

I did do a quick by the way but found mixed results so was hoping for a bit of clarification.

Thanks for any help guys :)

im no expert but standard shocks are billsteins anyway, which are good in themselves, so if your on a budget lowering springs would be your best bet, i have no experience with the apexi springs but im sure someone will be along soon enough to give you advice :thumleft:

i fitted Tein lowering springs to my 2on the standard shocks last sat. good job, the ride is a bit harsh but handles a lot better.

Tein springs are the only springs that actually lower the car 40mm. they are dearer than apex. got mine from rogue

I dont see why fitting 17 or 18 inch wheels should make any difference if you retain the outer diameter with the tyre fitted. It is only going to be the wheel offset in that case which may cause you problems with the tyres catching the arches.

I did think that too. The ones on atm are 16's i think so should ne be a problem in my case :)

The factory struts were designed for the factory springs and ride height. Lowering the car changes suspension geometry and lowers the ride height. The factory dampers should be ok for a while but the life on them is decreased.

Of course fitting bigger wheels will make a difference

You might be able to keep the same size overall but instead of having a big cusion of rubber full of air wrapped around your 14"/15" rim your going to have a thin rubber band wrapped around your 17"/18" rim. Therefore making the ride more harsh.

I think you'll find thats what the other guy was getting at.

ok - just a few facts...

if you lower the car on lowering springs... get yourself a set of camber adjustment bolts, peter at sbits does them, as does camskill? because with the car being macpherson struts the wheels go up in an arc and end up running on the inner edges of the tyres when you shorten the springs.

these tyre sizes might be a little out in terms of diamater, but you'll get the idea,

re the big wheels thing, basically spittin flames is right, but he forgot to mention one critical part of it, when you are really going for it, the more sidewall you have on your tyres, ie smaller wheels bigger tyres but same rolling radius, the more warning you will have that you are running out of grip.

this is because when the car elasn on the tyres with centrifugal force, the tyre distorts, leaving most of the tread at the bottom, think of lifting a bean baf off the floor, it changes shape a little to keep some of its base on the floor till the last possible moment. so it gradually loses contact, in this analogy - grip.

so - on say 235/55/15 on the back the tail will slowly lose grip and develop over steer gradually giving you time to ease off the steering input and gas in time. however on say 235/35/18 you have the same amount of rubber touching the ground, so initially the same grip. but as the car leans on to that rubber latterally, it cant flex as much and gives up its grip with much less warning than tyres with more sidewall

very difficult to put into words but hopefully you've got the idea.

there is a sticky explaining it much better than i ever could, i thinki it is in mechanical section iirc
