[Mk2] [Generic] Feckin Undertrays

Post by toxo »

I've just lost my 2nd set of front undertrays! I've got a bomex front bumper, which has nothing to attach the fronts of the undertrays to. So they're only attached to each other, and to the three large bolts that hold them on. It seems that I'm ok up til about 70, at which point the wind resistance around the radiator and the foglights seems enough to pop the front of the undertrays out from the bumper, and then they dig into the road :/

While we're on the subject, I'm pretty sure I'm missing some other undertrays as well. I don't seem to have one under the engine anywhere, I have the front one which covers up the steering rack, and the one behind that which covers the petrol tank etc. Which am I missing, and are they really that important?

I was going to offer you a set of replacement front one's -I think I've still got them but then I saw you have a Bomex bumper as well. There's no way of securing them on mine so probably no point in sending you them. I've got a single ali plate cut to size to replace them but haven't got round to fitting it yet.

I was under minr on Monday night -I think I have 3 sections (maybe just 2 long ones?) along the underside of the centre tunnel, and there are 2 plastic trays near under the front engine bulkhead, one to the drivers side, and one in the centre with a scoop to direct upwards. The isn't one on the passenger side. Not sure if that helps any?

I like that rear bumper you've got -I'm looking for something different, never been too taken with my rear spat add-ons.

I wouldn't use cable ties, somebody put these on mine and they came flying off whilst travelling on the motorway, needless to say i shat myself and had to limp home with them scraping on the road - not a good look.

I used cable ties on mine when they came off, they're secure if you mount them somewhere sensible :)

I should be able to get some sizes off the plate. Remind me if I forget.

It's much BIGGER than the OEM trays and a slightly different shape though for the bottom lip of the bumper, hence why I couldn't re-use the original trays.

I was going to drill the bottom of the bumper, then push rubber grommets in the holes (the electrical grommets used for passing cables through holes). The ali plate should bolt to the bottom of the bumper with a little bending / fettling to account for the curves on the bumper. It's going to be a winter project.

Had the same problem with my Border front. ](*,) ](*,)

However, got a little adventurous and got a second set of front undertrays (3 pieces) and chopped them to give a perfect fit!

Left the originals in position.

Just spread the two new front trays and fitted them to the front/edge of the bumper, (don't meet up in the middle anymore) and trimmed to the shape of the front bumper. Then chopped the larger back (of the front) tray in half and mounted it in the middle. All held on with original Toyota screws and the plastic clips that come from the wheelarches onto the bumper and with 5 of the big screw/pushclips from the front and rear bumpers holding the original and new sets together. (knew I should have taken some pics). #-o #-o

No rattles! \:D/ \:D/

I lost mine the other day, doing about 70 then just the sound of the front digging into the tarmac :(

Is it a problem if you don't have them?

I cant find replacements anywhere either
