Post by antman »

As above. I have managed to sourse another steering rack as either a donor for the steering rack ends or the whole rack replacement. just wanted to find out which is the easiest/best option. :-k

Any advise greatly appreciated......... :thumleft:

I'd be interested in knowing this too as I have a slight amount of play in my O/S steering, and from another post I read it's more likely to be the inner joint than the track rod end.

From that image, it doesn't look too bad a job..............Famous last words

From what i can remember it's not a hard job.

Easiest thing to do is turn em with mole grips instead of a spanner as you can get to em a bit easier.

Top tip, if you keep the rod end lock nut in roughly the same place, you can use it to line up the new ones so the tracking isn't a million miles out!

It really isn't that hard mate!

All you do is remove the outer track rod end, take off theundertray which will expose the track rod, loosen it with the mole grips et voila!

Fitting is obviosly the reverse of removal.

Lot cheaper than buying a new rack and a hell of a lot easier to fit :thumleft:

Ive just done mine for MOT. It failed as the balljoint was worn and produced a knock with the slightest of movement of the steering wheel.

Easy to do- x2 19mm spanners, put one on track rod end (connected to hub) and other on the end rod and rotate this rod until it comes out of the track rod end (it helps if you turn the steering wheel to gives more space). Then as above use mole grips or ideally, variable width pliers and undo.

Piece of pi*s. Might be worth getting your tracking done afterwards. People will say "mark the number of threads before you undo the 19mm bolt" but you'l struggle to get it spot on, best paying for the tracking.

Hope this helps.
