Idle Pully Bolt

Post by Negativvv »

Right its completey f*cked! Still cant believe whoever did the timing belt last had that bolt on "that" tightly!
The bolts rounded off so nothing gets a grip on it, not impact sockets not mole grips. Ive tried filing it down to a 13mm instead of 14mm but A) Cant get the space to file all sides of the bolt and B) Its too tight in there to get any sort of meaningful motion. With hindsight id have just filed off that stupid spike and replaced the bolt as it was only £1.40p
I guess i could...

A) Put it back together and drive it until the belt snaps

B) Find a decent mobile mechanic

C) Take it somewhere and probably get charged a fortune to get the bolt off...

Any other possible suggestions? ](*,)

Get yourself a set of Irwin bolt extractor sockets, the starter set cost about £20.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/IRWIN-BOLT-GRIP-F ... dZViewItem

They have a spiral pattern to the socket which as you turn the socket on the rounded off head they bite into the metal. They are 3/8" drive but they can also be used with a spanner for tight access. You will be surprised how much you will put them to use I've lost count of the knackered bolts I've removed using these.

I'd try mole grips, adjust them so you they're really tight to close or failing that, cut the point off and weld a bolt on to the end, use the bolt to loosen. The heat of welding will probably unseize the bolt.

Mole grips simply dont grip tight enough and slip off :?

Ive got nothing to weld with either!

Yup... Bolt / Stud Extractors will probably be your best bet now.

I had great success with one of these freeing up rounded bolts (although not on a car):
