[Mk2] [NA] rev3 abs problem

Post by mr k's mister2 »

hiya guys, im new here so sorry if this has already asked a million times!!

problem started a week or so back, the abs is coming on everytime just before the car comes to a stop, i've stripped and serviced all 4 calipers incase 1 was binding or anything but that hasnt solved the problem, all fluid has been replaced and the full system has been bled up including the master cylinder. the abs fault light isn't coming on either.
has anyone else had this problem or got any ideas whats causing it at all?
cheers

When you say the abs comes on, do you mean the light on the dash?

Could be some crap in the abs trigger wheels in the hubs?

nah the abs light doesnt come on, it just trips the abs in at the last minute as if a wheel was locking on a wet road or something. the pedal flaps around etc and the abs system makes its usual noise!!

as for checking ecu codes i didnt think i could do this unless the abs light was coming on? which ecu do i need to check for the abs system, the 1 under the bonnet (front end! lol) or the engine hatch? and is it just a case if putting a paperclip across the terminals and counting the lights?

Strange, I thought the light was supposed to come on when the ABS is activated?

Sounds very like a sensor issue. As to how to diagnose which one it is:

Either swap a good sensor for each in turn, and try it out.
Or
Maybe there is some way to take a reading from the ABS ecu or ABS unit to see which channel is being triggered?

The first way probably would be the handiest, the second would be the most interesting. :)

cheers mate, i've had a read thru and it looks like the info i have on cd rom, gonna get it plugged into diagnostics tomorrow night after work and see if i can get a code from the ecu. im thinking its a sensor or a sensor rotor to be fair due toclipping a kerb a few weeks back, only thing is it didnt affect abs at all when it happened it started a few days later???
