South West Peninsula - new group

Post by spolky »

Following an owners' meeting in Exeter, I have been volunteered to notify our intention of setting up some local meets. Where and when they take place will depend on who wants to get involved - my personal preference would be to set up a Devon & Cornwall 'group'. This is not instead of the IMOC, but in addition to it. Due to the nature of the terrain and distance between owners here, I think we all need to get more involved in organizing local activities, so I guess it could be some sort of 'sub-group', not operated by the IMOC but helping to promote it to a wider audience out here in the wild west.

I have decided to call this group 'Peninsula MR2' - as in the South West Peninsula. This leaves it pretty well open to anybody from Penzance to Weston S.M. to Weymouth, though I envisage the majority of interest will some from the South Devon coastal sprawl - from Exeter to Plymouth.

What I need to know is who is interested, where are they, and what do they want to do? The intention would be to organize meets, go to shows, get involved with technical help etc. A list of members can be drawn up and people can get together and help each other out.

I particularly want people who are interested in maintenance and repair, and soucing spare parts - ideally someone with enough space to break cars and store parts, which can then be sold on to other members. Another member may want to organize events, and others might want to specialize in ICE or modding.

I have run car clubs before and know what great benefits can be had by pooling resources and knowledge. If we can generate enough interest I will try and negotiate discounts from local suppliers and garages, and possibly attract these by publishing a local newsletter with advertizing space. This internet club is great, and I am not trying to criticize it or step on it's toes, but it is spread too thin and too far removed from many of us.

Another possibility is to collaborate with Celica owners, or other Toyota owners, or even other Jap cars. I am open to suggestions regarding all aspects of this, and we will try and organize something that benefits everbody in the far SW, wherever they are.

Anybody who is even vaguely interested can contact me here: [email protected]

howdy!

im in bridgwater, somerset.

without sounding disrespectful to the guys that IMOC (as this is a great site!!) regional sub-groups would be a good idea. They've done it on The Mini Forum and it doesnt deter form the main "general" areas as the regional groups are usually only used for organising local meets or to ask if anyone local can help with diagnosing a problem or the like.

I wouldnt really use a totally south west based mr2 forum instead of this one as im here now and i like it and im also heavily involved with South West Performance Car where im in charge of the merchandising.....but at the same time it would be cool to have regular south west meets (like steven.whiteside seems to want to do :thumleft: ) and/or a dedicated south west mr2 breaker.

cheers

No I don't intend having any website content, because this site covers everything already and it would be daft to just have a regional website. My intention is just to organise events and parts for SW owners, as we don't really seem to have much going on down here. It would be an informal group of people getting together and hopefully helping each other out. This site - and the IMOC in general - might also benefit from having more people involved at local levels. It is impractical for the IMOC to organise such a small local group, which is why we should do it ourselves.

I only want people who are willing to get involved and be prepared to give as well as take. Anybody who wants to get involved should email me as mentioned above - [email protected] - as I think discussing it on here is a mis-use of the forum.

Thanks
