Possiblity of a meet on Airfield near Ipswich

Post by irish_dan »

Hello there people. Since I've bought my tubby I've found out one thing....there's never enough road ahead of you! So when my housemate told me about his sister in law owning an old Airfield I immediately asked him about the possibility of using it once or twice.

Well, he got in contact with his sister and law today and she said that I was welcome to come along myself at any time apart from this weekend. The reason why I wasn't able to come this weekend was there happened to be a womans car meet!

What women need an airfield to have a meeting for is beyond me  :eye: (JK)

Anyway, the fact that there actually was a car meet already being held there made me wonder if maybe I could persuade her to let us IMOC'ers have one too....

Anyway, long story short I'm going to Ipswich tonight to have a word with her. Seeing as my housemate is coming along too and he's her brother in law I'm pretty confident we'll get something organised....

This is where I need your help. I have no idea of when and where there are meets already taking place. What details should I have for her and what points should I try most to impress upon her?

Is there going to be any insurance needed? Will we try get a quarter mile going down one of the straights? I will obviously mention to her that there are NO idiots coming along and that there will be absolutely zero tolerance to idiotic driving.

Anyways......thoughts? Like I said. It's not set in stone yet but there is a vey good chance it might be taking place....sometime in the near future also as I'll be buggering off for a 2 month holiday in the middle of July and she's only willing to talk with me and my housemate about it.....

Bentwaters Airbase

Its also the place where Channel 4 ran that show Space Cadets a few years back.....where they tricked people into thinking they were training for a space mission!

I only live a couple of miles away, so I find it hard not to say I'd be up for this........

Kind Regards
Baruc.

Bentwaters was my first look at loads of Mr2's on the the track and it would be great if it could be on :D
If you can get it going again, even i who have not been on a track day before would be interested : :)

Right guys, got back from Woodbridge late last night and am sadly no further along....

From the brief conversation I did have I got the impression that it would be no problem....she said there are very few events taking place at the airfield and that dates for any planned events shouldn't cause any problems....

I would like to give her a more informed discription of what we would be planning to do? I cant really organise this all on my own as I have no experience with the organisation of such an event....I merely am in the position to offer a venue....

I should be having another conversation with her soon or my housemate will go visit her and talk to her in person on my behalf....either way it would be nice to have some ideas to bounce off her.....

Just down the road from the venue. Is this the old Woodbridge airfield? If so I have sprint raced there a few years back on my 68 Crooks-Suzuki 500. I would bring my MR2 along for the day. I kinda thought Bentwaters was still a Yank base?

Guys,
I am helping organise a 2 day (weekend) event at Woodbridge in August for the GT4OC.
The Saturday will be a track day and Sunday will be 2 lane drag "racing"
We use the services of Javelin motor sport who arrange the curcuit and marshall the events.

It maybe possible that we will have a few spare places for one or both days

I am working on camping arrangements at present

If you want to drop me a line I will keep you informed of whats going on

regards
Dave

Thats very interesting Dave. I know there is a company that I can go through to get everything I need and that may be the only way to get it done in the end....

What I was planning on doing was going through the owners which may bring down any price we have to pay.....although as you have said the marshalling, etc would have been sorted by the company which would make things much easier....

Anyway, it's not going to happen soon....so I will have to look at all the options open to me really....as long as there's interest I'm sure it can be done.....

Just an update on whats happening with this meet....I'm afraid to say it but things have taken a turn for the worse and it now looks like this meet will no longer go ahead.

Long story short, there has been some very serious personal problems with the family that own the airfield and organising a meet is currently the last thing on their minds.

I'm very sorry for getting peoples hopes up but there was no way for me, or anyone else for that matter, to have seen this coming....

If anything changes in the coming weeks/months I'll let you all know but as of now its not going ahead.....
