AM I WASTING MY TIME???

Post by n.dot »

I recently bought a MK1 MR2, but am needing more power.

Should I

a) Treat the bodywork, make it mechanically sound, then go for the 2.0 litre turbo conversion??

or

b) Keep the car standard, and save for a Porsche Boxter??

I'm worried about throwing money at such an old car - I am passionate about the car, but just need some advice please.

Cheers guys \:D/

Ultimately it is your decision, but I'd never in a million years buy a porsche boxter.
Restore the Mr2 gets my vote.

How bad is the bodywork?
If you can't see the angle, you're in trouble.

Okay, the bodywork ain't that bad. My mate said he'll do the rust problem for me (rear arches) by cutting away (??) and welding in new metal??? Either way, I trust him to do it - but I've just noticed the stupid water temp sensor is going funny.

I'd love to keep this car and make it a 1.5. Dunno though, I'll have to think about it over the next couple weeks.

Hi - couple of factors not outlined in your post:

1. How long will it take for you to save for a porsche boxter.

2. Does it have to be a Mr2 mk1 (nobody buys them for power), what about a Lotus Elise.

Personally IMO I would suggest stop worrying and start enjoying the car you have - they are brilliant (for the money)

People who wouldn't buy a Boxster have never driven one. Awesome cars and will outdo the MR2 in almost every respect (sorry but it's true, there are better cars out there. :) )

Hence if it is power/performance you are looking for - get another car IMHO. If you love the MK1 restore it sympathetically and have fun in it anyway, or if it's not good enough for that strip it and track the nuts off it. :thumleft:

i'd uprate the mk1 personally.
it'll be cheaper and its more fun.
plus it'll great to blow away a porsche boxster with a MK1.5!!

Porsche boxster for £11k - I'd be worried about throwing money at such an old car.

Pah, try

Risty MK1: £200
REPAIRS: £150
4 part worn tyres: £80

Lapping a Maserati 3200 GT bi-turbo at Brands Hatch - Priceless, and some.

Wouldn't have felt so good, except the guy had an ego to match the car too.

It's the little things that make life bearable.... :D

Only you can decide.

Whatever money you throw at an MR2, you won't get back, particularly so if you stuff a MK2 engine in it.

Agree, only you can decide.
My thoughts have always been on a cost to enjoyment ratio.
I get more fun out of my MK1 then I would out of a Porsche that I would be paying through the nose to buy, insure, service and run.
Its not just the purchasing it, its keeping it.
I know when I had a 911 Turbo for a weekend my fuel bill was astronomical, partly because it was a bit of fun and I drove it EVERYWHERE but also due to the increased fuel consumption.

Cars are a money pit, a friend has a Honda VTR1000 SP2, I would get one if I wanted to go crazy fast, oh damn bikes are a money pit too.

Stay passionate about the car, fix it up and stand back and admire your work and effort, all the enjoyment is in the handling. The other day I had some nagging thoughts after driving my mk1NA, I think I prefer it to my SC.

Personally, i don't like the look of the Porsche Boxster, i much prefer the look of a mk1 but maybe i'm stuck in 80's
If i had the spare cash at the moment, i would go the 1.5 route.
I haven't been out in one yet but they sound as though they are great fun!
Best not get involved in a mk1 1.5 track debate again, as that got a bit out of hand :?
If i had a mk1, slightly tatty na, rather than my slightly tatty sc, i'm sure i would have gone for the 1.5 by now :!:
